Kunek inspires Rangers to Spring Shield victory
A dominant Dandenong Rangers have thrashed the Logan Thunder 70-58 to win the WNBL Spring Shield pre-season tournament final at Dandenong Stadium today.
In a one-sided final, Dandenong burst out of the blocks to quickly establish a double digit lead, and despite the best efforts of the Thunder, were never headed.
The win capped off a successful weekend for the Rangers who went undefeated in their three games, accounting for the Canberra Capitals and Sydney Uni Flames before wrapping up the WNBL Spring Shield against Logan.
Alice Kunek led the way for the Rangers, posting a team-high 13 points in the final on her way to a tournament-high 60 points at 20 per game.
The move from the Melbourne Boomers to Dandenong appears to have brought out the best in the free-scoring star, with a brilliant 37-point performance in the opening night win over Canberra.
Making the win more impressive was the calibre of the absent players from the Rangers squad, headlined by Australian Opals star Jenna O’Hea, who is currently in WNBA playoff action with the Los Angeles Sparks.
Despite the loss, Logan will take plenty of positives away from the tournament, with off-season recruits Opal Hanna Zavecz and Sarah Graham providing scoring punch.
The return of Kristi Harrower potentially moves closer, with the four-time Olympian and captain of the Bendigo Spirit’s 2013 WNBL Championship team getting through two of three games in typically impressive fashion.
The 38-year-old is expected to make a decision in the coming week regarding her playing intentions for 2013/14 WNBL season.
