Phipps extends commitment to Australian Rugby

Wallabies and New South Wales Waratahs scrumhalf Nick Phipps has signed a two-year contract extension with Australian Rugby that will take him through until the end of the 2017 season.

The 25-year-old has played 28 Tests and played in all 14 Test matches featuring Australia during the 2014 international calendar.

Phipps maintained his starting position in all Test matches since the Wallabies’ thrilling 24-23 win over the Springboks in the 2014 Castrol Edge Rugby Championship. Read more

Mariners and Roar play out six goal thriller

Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar played out a pulsating 3-3 draw at a raucous Central Coast Stadium on Saturday, the two sides sharing the A-League spoils following a see-sawing 90 minutes at Gosford’s idyllic bayside arena.

Jean Carlos Solorzano handed Frans Thijssen’s charges the lead just before half time when he made no mistake in firing beyond Liam Reddy from six yards – the goal was the Costa Rican’s first in the competition for three years.

But while Roar may have shaded the play in the first 45, the Mariners came storming out of the blocks in the second stanza as they bid to send the strong crowd of 9,932 gathered on the banks of the Brisbane Water home happy. Read more

The Badger is Back! Cummins to return to Force

Nick ‘Honey Badger’ Cummins will return to the Western Force for the 2015 Asteron Life Super Rugby season.

Cummins, who has played 74 matches for the Western Australian club over the past seven seasons, was granted a release from his Western Force contract on compassionate grounds to join Japanese club, the Coca Cola Red Sparks, at the end of the 2014 Super Rugby competition.

However, the 27-year-old, who has been capped 15 times for the Wallabies, will return to the Force after being granted leave from his current contract by the Fukuoka-based club. Read more

Rampant Glory equals A-League record

A Chris Harold brace, a Danny De Silva stunner and Andy Keogh’s seventh goal of the season capped off a night of brilliance from the boys in the West as Perth Glory FC stormed to their eighth home league win in a row.

The performance matched the A-League record as Glory thrashed the Central Coast Mariners 4-1 on Saturday night at home.

Central Coast got the game underway at a picturesque nib Stadium and looked comfortable in possession from the outset. Read more

Tasmania score upset win over NSW Breakers

A century from NSW vice-captain Rachael Haynes could not prevent Tasmania from recording their first ever win over the NSW Breakers in any format, with the Roar scoring a 23 run victory in the Women’s National Cricket League 50 over match at Manly Oval today.

Winning the toss, Breakers captain Alex Blackwell elected to field first with Tasmania bowled out for 255 on the last ball of their innings.

Heather Knight has been the rock in Tasmania’s batting order all summer and today’s match was no exception. Read more

Ashley-Cooper signs deal with Bordeaux

NSW Waratah veteran Adam Ashley-Cooper has signed a two-year contract with leading French club Bordeaux Begles.

Ashley-Cooper, who has earned 46-caps for the NSW Waratahs and 104 test caps for the Wallabies in an already impressive rugby career, will make the move to the Top 14 French team following the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

“I am very excited to announce that I have signed with top 14 French team Bordeaux and thoroughly look forward to beginning the next chapter of my career and facing the new challenges that the French competition provides,” said Ashley-Cooper. Read more

Gallant Glory come close in Adelaide

Perth Glory has fallen just short of claiming its first silverware in ten years, going down 1-0 to Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Tuesday night.

A hostile home crowd, coupled with a Josh Risdon red card and a neat Sergio Cirio finish in the 67th minute was enough to see Kenny Lowe and his men return to Perth empty handed. However Glory was far from disgraced, labouring hard for the full 90 minutes in what was the inaugural FFA Cup Final.

In front of 16-thousand football fans in the city of churches, Glory made one change to its starting XI with the injured Mitch Nichols making way for Ruben Zadkovich. Read more

Force unveils 10th anniversary playing strip

The Western Force has launched its anniversary playing strip ahead of the 2015 Asteron Life Super Rugby competition – the club’s 10th season in the tournament.

Representative Western Force players were involved in the design process with the 10th anniversary jersey featuring the iconic swan on the front the Force’s ocean blue jersey.

Gold trim and black panels under the arms link back to the traditional state colours of Western Australia, where rugby has been played in the state for more than 120 years.

The jersey also has the Western Force’s ’10 Years’ logo emblazoned on the chest while each name of of the 126 players that have represented the Force in Super Rugby since 2006 is listed on the lower back.

The ‘away’ playing strip is predominantly white featuring the black swan across the front, and Western Force blue trim. Read more

Blockbuster opening to 2015 NRL Season

The 2015 NRL Premiership will open with a series of blockbuster matches and live television coverage of Sunday afternoon games will return next year.

And ANZAC Day will be one of the biggest days in the code’s history with five games being played in Auckland, Newcastle, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane on the same day.

NRL Head of Commercial, Paul Kind said the Premiership Season would open in front of a massive crowd at Suncorp Stadium with the Broncos taking on 2014 premiers South Sydney. Read more
