Mariners celebrate NYE with three points

The Central Coast Mariners have recorded a convincing 3-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix on the last day of 2015 courtesy of goals to Fabio Ferreira, Mitch Austin & Mickey Neill.

Two goals in the space of four minutes to Ferreira & Austin plus a maiden A-League goal in the second half to Neill were enough to seal three points at Central Coast Stadium.

It was an attacking and entertaining affair on Gosford’s waterfront for the 10,073 Members and fans who turned out on New Year’s Eve. Read more

WBBL Strikers end year on a high

The Adelaide Strikers have kicked off Adelaide’s New Year’s Eve party in style with a 35-run win over the Perth Scorchers at Adelaide Oval today.

Packed on paper with international superstars, the Western Australian side imploded, falling to 100 all out as they failed to chase the Adelaide Strikers’ target of 135 in front of a 10,500-strong crowd.

The Strikers set out with intent from the start, running well and setting a strong platform with star wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Taylor (48) once again the lynchpin. The pressure created by a competitive total was soon capitalised upon by some probing and disciplined bowling to rip through the Scorchers batting line-up. Read more

Kooyong to host Davis Cup first round

Victoria received a boost today with Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club named to host the Davis Cup World Group first round tie between Australia and the United States from 4 to 6 March 2016.

The former home of the Australian Open will host its first Davis Cup tie in 10 years with a portable grass court to be installed on Kooyong’s famous centre court.

Australia’s last meeting on grass at Kooyong against the United States took place in 1993 and next year’s tie will mark the two nations’ 46th Davis Cup battle. Read more

2015 Newcombe Medalist joins Sydney field

Newcombe Medal winner Sam Groth (Vic) will return home to kickstart his 2016 season, with the NSW born and bred 28-year-old granted a wildcard into the Sydney International.

Groth enjoyed a breakout season in 2015 which saw him reach the third round of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, where he faced Roger Federer on centre court, and play a major role in Australia’s Davis Cup comeback win over Kazakhstan in Darwin.

He capped his stellar year with the ultimate reward, receiving Australian Tennis’s top prize, the Newcombe Medal, at a ceremony in Melbourne in November. Read more

Strikers sizzle in the Furnace

The Adelaide Strikers have accounted for the Scorchers at The Furnace in Perth this evening by four wickets.

The Strikers notched up a third win from five visits to the WACA Ground and second overall from as many starts in season five of the Big Bash League.

Man of the match Adil Rashid spun a web over Michael Carberry, Mitch Marsh and the Scorchers middle-order to finish with 2 for 21 off four overs then hit the winning run. Read more

Perth Lynx crush Canberra Capitals

The Perth Lynx have crushed the Canberra Capitals 88-68 at the Bendat Basketball Centre, to go three wins clear on top of the WNBL ladder.

The result is the Lynx third straight win and extends their season win-loss record to 11 and four.

In another clinical performance, the home side showed their depth with four players finishing with double figure totals – Tessa Lavey leading the way with 18 including four threes. Read more

Woods named as Wests Tigers Captain

Wests Tigers have today confirmed that Aaron Woods will be the Club’s Captain for the 2016 NRL season.

Woods, 24, has played 105 NRL games for Wests Tigers since making his debut in 2011.

The Leichhardt Junior has also played five Tests for Australia and has made seven State of Origin appearances for New South Wales. Read more

Australian Rugby announces new media rights arrangements

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has announced new and significantly improved media rights arrangements for 2016-2020 which will enable the code to re-energise the game at grassroots level and invest in key strategic areas to ensure its future health and prosperity.

The ARU will receive a total of AUD $285m in media rights revenue from the total package of SANZAAR agreements – a 148% increase on revenue achieved from the previous media rights arrangements (2011-15).

Fox Sports will continue its proud partnership with Rugby after retaining the Australian rights for Test matches played in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as the expanded 18-team Asteron Life Super Rugby competition which will for the first time feature teams from Argentina and Japan in 2016. Ferguson out for remainder of 2015-16 season

Southern Redbacks batsman Callum Ferguson has suffered a cruel blow to his 2015/16 season, with scans today confirming the 31-year-old has torn the ACL in his left knee.

Ferguson injured his knee while fielding in a practice match with his BBL side, the Melbourne Renegades yesterday.

Scans this morning revealed an ACL tear in his left knee, ruling him out of the remainder of the summer. Read more

Coaches name teams for NRL All Stars match

Some of the biggest names in the NRL have been chosen to play in the annual All Stars match in Brisbane in February.

For the first time, a World All Stars team has been chosen to take on the reigning champion Indigenous All Stars team at Suncorp Stadium on February 13.

It will include stars of the calibre of Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Semi Radradra, James Graham and Martin Taupau. Read more
