Hurn retains Eagles captaincy

Monday January 18, 2016

Shannon Hurn has been endorsed by his peers and the coaching staff as a unanimous choice to continue as West Coast Eagles captain for the 2016 season.

That decision was formalised today when the playing group was informed of the leadership structure for the coming year and it was no surprise that the rebounding half-back was retained in the role.

The support network around him will also remain familiar with Josh Kennedy, Matt Priddis and Eric Mackenzie continuing in the senior leadership group while midfielder Luke Shuey has been elevated.

Kennedy, the all-Australian vice-captain in 2015, is the sole club vice-captain.

Senior coach Adam Simpson said it was great to keep some continuity within the leadership structure.

“Stability is important in the senior leadership group and we are fortunate to have some high quality individuals to call upon,” Simpson said. “Shannon had an exceptional first year as captain and Josh, Matt and Eric were terrific support for him.

“The elevation of Luke is indicative of his growth in the last couple of years and we are excited by what he brings to the group.”
