Wallabies defeated by Scotland in tight Sydney battle

Scotland has held on for a dramatic 24-19 victory over the Wallabies at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Down by five points at the break, the Wallabies took the lead for the first time in the match mid-way through the second half after a try to Will Genia, however the Scots hit back through flanker Hamish Watson five minutes later and thwarted Australia’s late charge to emerge five-point winners.

Six Nations star, flyhalf Finn Russell continued his hot form for Scotland scoring a try and landing a perfect three-from-three with the boot to guide the visitors home. Read more

Heroic Hodgson hangs them up

Western Force club legend and inaugural player Matt Hodgson has today announced his retirement from professional rugby after 12 spectacular seasons with the Western Australian club.

The 35-year-old announced to his teammates yesterday that he would be hanging up the boots at the end of the season after 139 Super Rugby appearances in a career that has included three Nathan Sharpe Medals, four Geoffrey Stooke Force Man Awards and 11 Wallaby caps.

The hardnosed backrower started at openside flanker in the club’s inaugural match against the Brumbies in 2006 and has represented the blue jersey with distinction, bravery and unwavering commitment ever since, including four years as club captain from 2013-2016.

A favourite of the Sea of Blue, Hodgson says the decision was an emotional one but feels the time is right to hand the reigns over to the promising next generation coming through the club’s ranks. Read more

Australia U20s into Fifth Place Final after Italian victory

The Australia U20s have defeated Italy 42-19 at the World Rugby U20s Championship overnight, in Tbilisi, Georgia, moving Australia into the battle to finish in Fifth.

Australia scored six tries to three in the dominant display with Australian centre Izaia Perese scoring a hat-trick against the Italians.

Australia were forced to work for their victory with Italy bringing the match to within two points at the half time break, but the Australians found their groove, to bury the match in the second half with four tries.

Australia U20s Head Coach, Simon Cron said: “I thought we played a lot better field position in the second half. We were still a bit under par in terms of our execution and I thought some of our guys were trying to offload too much in heavy contact and we gave that message at half time. Read more

Barbarouses back in blue

Melbourne Victory is delighted to announce the signing of 2014/15 double winning attacker, and New Zealand international, Kosta Barbarouses.

With 73-games in the navy blue already to his name, Barbarouses re-joins the club for a further two seasons.

The 27-year-old joins Socceroo Rhys Williams and young defender Thomas Deng as additions to head coach Kevin Muscat’s squad ahead of the 2017/18 A-League season. Read more

Teams confirmed for ‘game-changing’ Pro League

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has confirmed that Australia’s men’s and women’s national teams (FIH Hero World Ranking: 2 & 4) will participate in the Hockey Pro League, a unique global international team-sport league.

The new league, which is due to launch in January 2019, will see the nine best men’s and women’s teams from around the world play each other both at home and away every year, across a total of 144 games. The fixtures will take place in national stadiums, week in, week out, from January to June.

Australia, one of the world’s best men’s teams, will face Argentina, Belgium, England/Great Britain, Germany, India, Netherlands, New Zealand and Pakistan in the new league, with the latter playing their home matches in Scotland. Read more

Rebels sign Aussie Sevens star

The Melbourne Rebels have signed Australian Sevens star Henry Hutchison for the 2018 and 2019 Super Rugby seasons.

Hutchison’s contract comes off the back of a meteoric rise on the International Sevens stage which saw him awarded the 2016 World Rugby Sevens Rookie of the Year and earn Australian selection for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The 20-year-old has taken the Sevens circuit by storm with 52 tries – 260 points – in 91 matches since his debut at the Cape Town Sevens in South Africa in December 2015. Read more

Wallabies down Fiji in June series opener

The Wallabies have started their 2017 campaign in strong fashion with a 37-14 victory over Fiji in an entertaining clash at AAMI Park, Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

The flying Fijians were at their attacking best, but a committed Wallabies side kept them at bay in the seven-try spectacle.

Wallabies fliers Israel Folau and Henry Speight both registered a try-scoring double, as the Aussies produced some brilliant attack of their own to kick of the international season in style. Read more

ARU welcomes Sevens funding boost

Australia Rugby Union (ARU) has welcomed today’s announcement by the Australian Sports Commission (ASC) and AIS of the Commonwealth Government’s $122 million investment in national sporting organisations for 2017/18.

The Australian Women’s Sevens team, Gold Medallists at the Rio Olympic Games in August last year, have been bolstered by a $500k (65% increase) in funding for their program ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Total ASC support for the Women’s Sevens program will be $1.265m for the coming year. Read more

Australia U20s fall short against England

The Australia U20s have come agonisingly close to securing a semi-finals berth, losing the match lead in the 78th minute to go down 19-20 to the reigning World U20s and Six Nations champions, England.

Sione Tuipulotu scored Australia’s only try and the kicking of Harrison Goddard kept Australia in front for the entire first half, which was dominated by the youthful Australian side.

After France beat Georgia 54-0 in their Pool, Australia needed to win to make it into the semi finals as the second seed, or draw with a bonus point to secure the coveted wildcard spot for the best runner-up in the Pools. Read more

Wests Tigers sign two outside backs

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce the signing of outside backs Mahe Fonua and Corey Thompson for the coming two seasons.

The new two-year deal will see both players who are currently playing in the English Super League join Wests Tigers until at least the end of the 2019 season.

A Tongan international in 2013 and 2015, Fonua will join Wests Tigers after spending the last two seasons at Hull FC. Named as part of the 2016 Super League Dream Team, Fonua also helped Hull FC win the 2016 Challenge Cup Final, scoring a try in the win. Read more
