Roosters win 2017 Auckland Nines
It was the year of the Rooster at the 2017 NRL Auckland Nines, with the Sydney Roosters taking out the final against the Penrith Panthers, 10–8.
The Roosters held a 10–0 lead at half-time, with Daniel Tupou and Bernard Lewis scoring tries in both the semi-final (against the Storm) and final.
Malakai Watene-Zelezniak crossed for the Panthers in the second half, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Roosters utility Connor Watson was named Player of the Tournament, while Jillaroos player Chelsea Baker was named Most Valuable Player of the women’s series.
The Roosters beat the Broncos in their quarter-final (15–14) and Storm in their semi-final (21–16) on their way to the final.
The Jillaroos completed a 3–0 clean sweep against the Kiwi Ferns, after winning both games on the final day of the tournament (8–0 and 14–4). It was the Jillaroos first series win since the Nines commenced.
NRL Head of Football, Brian Canavan congratulated the Roosters, along with tournament partners ATEED and Duco Events and thanked tournament sponsor Downer for another successful Nines.
“Fans at the games and watching on TV have witnessed some entertaining rugby league to commence the 2017 rugby league season, with 187 tries across 34 matches over two days,” Mr Canavan said.
“In addition to the weekend, all Clubs, together with the Harvey Norman Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns, participated in community visits and fan days, meeting with thousands of supporters and encouraging budding rugby league players to continue to enjoy the sport.
“The lead up to the Nines and the Nines itself continues to be a popular event for players and fans alike and this form of the game will continue to be part of our game into the future.”
