Eight rookies named for June Test action

Wallabies Coach Michael Cheika has named eight uncapped players within his 34-man squad for the upcoming ‘Arvo’ Test Rugby Series against Fiji, Scotland and Italy, kicking-off on June 10. Cheika made the announcement live on Fox Sports’ Super Rugby:Kick & Chase tonight.

Young forwards Lukhan Tui, Richard Hardwick and Ned Hanigan have earned selection in their first Wallabies squad after a series of impressive performances in Vodafone Super Rugby.

Backs Joe Powell, Eto Nabuli and Karmichael Hunt will get their second taste in camp after featuring in the June squad last year, while Marika Koroibete has been named after experiencing his first taste in Wallabies camp on the 2016 Spring Tour.

Jack Dempsey, a development player on last year’s Northern Hemisphere Tour, has earned selection in the main squad after returning from an ankle injury last weekend for Gordon in Sydney’s Shute Shield. Read more

Mariners gain Antony Golec

The Central Coast Mariners are excited to announce the signing of Australian defender, Antony Golec ahead of the A-League 2017/18 season.

The 27-year-old defender returns to Australia after plying his trade abroad with FC Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldovan National Division), Persepolis FC (Persian Gulf Pro League) & most recently Bucheon FC 1995 (K League Challenge).

The Australian Youth International has signed a one-year-deal and will be known to Australian football fans for his 59 combined appearances in the A-League with Sydney FC, Adelaide United, Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory. Read more

Aussie Women claim third at Canada Sevens

The Australian Women’s Sevens side has finished the Canada Sevens in third place with a strong 26-12 victory over France in the Third Place Play Off securing the Bronze Medal.

Australia were left to lament a tight 10-17 defeat against hosts Canada in a thrilling Semi Final that saw the hosts hold back a late surging Aussie 7s in front of their home crowd.

Emilee Cherry was the star for Australia on day two, scoring a hat-trick of tries well supported by Cassie Staples who added to her brace of tries on day one with a hat-trick of her own in the Finals. Read more

Aussie Women through to Canada Sevens Quarter Finals

The Australian Women’s Sevens team has qualified for the Quarter Final stage of the Canada Sevens in Langford with victories over Spain and Ireland with a tough draw over Fiji making up the day.

Australia’s undefeated effort means that the women in gold qualify in the top position of Pool C and will take on the USA in Quarter Final 2 at 3.52am AEST on Monday 29 May.

A bright spark for Australia was debutant Cassie Staples who impressed with two tries in her first tournament of the HSBC Women’s Sevens World Series, highlighting her great potential in Rugby Sevens. Read more

Kangaroos to face Fiji and PNG in Suva

The Australian Kangaroos will face Fiji and PNG in an historic contest in Suva ahead of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

The innovative format of the match will see all three teams face each other on October 14, at Suva’s ANZ Stadium.

Fiji will face PNG before Australia takes on both PNG and finally Fiji. All three match-ups will last 40 minutes. Read more

Sydney Sevens to light up 2018 Australia Day Weekend

The Sydney Sevens will be bigger than ever in 2018 with the tournament to kick off on Australia Day for three days of explosive women’s and men’s rugby action.

In a world first for the Sevens World Series, the men’s and women’s tournaments will be completely integrated with both tournaments held across three days on the iconic grounds of Allianz Stadium, Sydney. Both the women’s and men’s finals will be on Sunday 28 January as the best of the 12 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams battle it out to be crowned champions.

After 75,412 fans enjoyed the three-day 2017 Sydney 7s, the carnival atmosphere will reach new heights in 2018 with the tournament to be held over a long weekend for the first time, making it the perfect sporting event for the whole family, whether they’re from Sydney or travelling to the Harbour City. Australia finish London Sevens in sixth

The Australian Men’s Sevens team have finished the 2016/17 Sevens World Series in sixth place, following the final leg in London.

Australia were defeated by United States of America in their Cup Quarter-Final before beating New Zealand by a record margin in the Fifth Place Semi Final. Australia couldn’t finish it off with a win though, as they went down fighting in the Fifth Place Final, to 2016/17 Sevens World Series Champions South Africa.

Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Andy Friend said: “I thought the boys did really well to bounce back and put 40 points on New Zealand, who have been a really tough team for us to beat.

“And then we had the chance to beat the current World Champions at the end and for all bar the last 30 seconds, I thought we were going to win that. A disappointing day with positive signs but we finished sixth at the tournament and sixth for the season so it’s probably a fitting result. Read more

Aussies through to London Cup Quarter-Finals

The Australian Men’s Sevens team have qualified for the Cup Quarter-Finals in London following two wins on day one at Twickenham.

Australia will now play United States of America in the Cup Quarter Final at 7:58pm (AEST) on Sunday May 21.

Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Andy Friend said: “It was probably some of the most clinical rugby we’ve played. The boys started really well against Samoa, we had our opportunities against England and it was a game that we probably could have and should have won and then to put 50 points on Spain at the end topped off what was a very good day.” Read more

Highlanders smash the Force

The Highlanders have easily outclassed the Western Force to notch a club record 55-6 victory at nib Stadium in Perth this evening.

The Dunedin-based side made the most of the wet conditions for a new franchise record 49-point win margin, scoring eight tries to nil which helped them remain alive for a wildcard place in the Super Rugby finals.

Late replacement prop Aki Seiuli and Rob Thompson both bagged doubles, while fly-half Marty Banks slotted seven of his eight goal attempts. Read more

Thurston signs up for 2018 Season

Champion Cowboy Johnathan Thurston will see out his career at the club in which he has tasted most of his success as a rugby league superstar after agreeing to a one-year contract extension.

Thurston said he had no intention of finishing his playing days at anywhere other than the North Queensland Cowboys, with the new deal formally unveiled at the club’s mid-year gala.

“It’s a real joy to be able to say I’ll be continuing on with the Cowboys in NRL season 2018,” Thurston said. Read more
