WACA to host Third Ashes Test

Wednesday May 10, 2017

The WACA Ground has today been confirmed as the host venue for the Third Ashes Test between old rivals Australia and England this summer.

The iconic WACA Ground announced as host of the Third Ashes Test.

The full schedule for the 2017-18 Australian international summer of Cricket was released in December 2016 with the Perth venue left as ‘to be confirmed’.

Discussions with relevant officials at Cricket Australia, the Western Australian Cricket Association, Venues Live (Stadium Operators) and the WA Government have taken place since then.

However, with the match-day tickets for all five Test matches around Australia going on sale this month, the final decision of which Perth venue would host the third Test had to be made.

While all involved in those recent discussions were hopeful the new 60,000-seated Perth Stadium would be completed and in a position to host the Third Test, they all agreed this week the iconic home of WA Cricket – the WACA Ground – would host this Test from December 14-18.

“It’s good now we have some certainty around where the Perth Test match is going to be played,” Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said today.

“We received advice yesterday in meetings with government … that the new Perth stadium would not be ready in time for the Perth Ashes Test.

“Part of the good news is there’s still a very strong chance the one-day international will be played at the new Perth Stadium,” Sutherland added.

“At this stage it is probably unlikely any of the Big Bash League or Women’s BBL matches will be played there at the new Stadium … there is a slight chance the Final could be played at the new Stadium.”

All parties involved remain hopeful the fifth and final One-Day International between Australia and England scheduled for January 28, 2018, will take place at the new Perth Stadium.

The on-sale date for the Perth Ashes Test tickets has yet to be confirmed, likely announcement from Cricket Australia within the next few days to a week.
