Alexander signs new Brumbies deal

The Brumbies have re-signed Ben Alexander for the 2018 Super Rugby season, the club legend agreeing to terms on a new one-year deal.

Alexander made his Brumbies debut in 2008 and has been with the club for the entirety of the last decade, becoming the club’s most capped player alongside Australian Rugby great George Smith.

The 32-year old has amassed 142 caps during his time in the Nation’s Capital and will likely become the franchise’s all-time most capped player when he returns from injury in the coming weeks. Read more

Daley destined for two more years in Perth

Western Force prop Ben Daley has re-signed for a further two seasons with the Western Australian franchise, securing his future until the end of the 2019 season.

The three-time capped Wallaby has played eight games for the club this season, and has been in near career best form, but unfortunately was struck down with an ACL injury in Round 10.

The tough loosehead says it was an easy decision to stay in Perth and is looking forward to being a part of the future of this team.

“I’m super excited to extend my time at a great club,” he said. “I feel like my career has been reinvigorated coming into a new environment and I’m pumped to continue to develop my game over the next few years. Read more

Federer and Bencic return for Hopman Cup

Swiss superstar and eighteen-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer and compatriot Belinda Bencic will return to Western Australia for the Hopman Cup in 2018.

The dynamic duo of Federer and Bencic starred in three record-breaking sessions at the event this year, with 13,917 fans turning out for the tie between Switzerland and France, the biggest tennis crowd in WA history.

An additional 6000 people flocked to Perth Arena to welcome Federer at an open practice session to celebrate his return to the tournament for the first time in 15 years, and his comeback to tennis after six months out of the game. Read more

Ballin announces retirement

Wests Tigers player Matt Ballin has today announced his retirement from the game, effective immediately.

Ballin has played 220 NRL games since making his debut in 2007, winning Premierships with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in 2008 and 2011 and representing Queensland in the 2010 State of Origin series.

The 33-year-old’s two seasons with Wests Tigers have unfortunately been hampered by injury, which ultimately led to his decision to retire. Read more

Socceroos outplayed Chile but exit Russia

The Socceroos matched it with one of world football’s best nations on the world’s biggest stage, outplaying Chile but falling short of advancing to the semi finals of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup after a 1-1 draw at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

In Tim Cahill’s 100th match for Australia, the Socceroos played a high energy, fast-paced, attack-minded brand of football that combined Ange Postecoglou’s football vision with the long-time characteristics of Socceroo teams of yesteryear.

Postecoglou was left shattered after an eye-catching display, “Hugely disappointed. Just for the players who’ve put in an enormous effort against a world-class team.” Read more

Wallabies complete Italian job to close out June Series

The Wallabies have defeated Italy 40-27 on a sun-soaked Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday afternoon.

The Wallabies powered in six tries, with Israel Folau and Sefa Naivalu both posting a double as they took down a spirited Azzuri outfit who trailed by just a point as the clock ticked down inside the final five minutes of play.

A 77th minute solo try to Bernard Foley gave the men in gold some breathing space, before a 50-metre dash down the left touchline from replacement back Reece Hodge blew the final margin out to 13 points. Read more

China to tour Australia

China will play two of Australia’s leading National Basketball League teams during a tour of Australia next month.

The Chinese national team will play Melbourne United at Melbourne Park on Sunday July 16 before taking on the Brisbane Bullets on the Gold Coast on July 18.

NBL Chief Executive Jeremy Loeliger said the games were a great opportunity to showcase basketball between two of the leading nations in the region. Read more

Reduction plans to proceed following EGM vote

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) Board has welcomed support of members as it proceeds with plans to reduce one Super Rugby team from Australia ahead of the 2018 season.

At an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) held at ARU headquarters in Sydney today, three resolutions were put to voting members, as proposed jointly by the Rugby Union Players Association (RUPA) and the Victorian Rugby Union (VRU);

1. The EGM considers that it is in the best interests of Rugby in Australia that Australia maintain its five current teams in the Super Rugby competition until at least the end of the 2020 Super Rugby season. Read more

McIlwrick commits to Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce that hooker Matt McIlwrick has signed a two-year contract extension with the Club.

The new deal will see McIlwrick remain with Wests Tigers until at least the end of the 2019 season.

Since arriving at Wests Tigers earlier this year, McIlwrick has played every game for the Club so far this season — cementing himself as the starting hooker on every occasion. Read more

Wallabies defeated by Scotland in tight Sydney battle

Scotland has held on for a dramatic 24-19 victory over the Wallabies at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Saturday afternoon.

Down by five points at the break, the Wallabies took the lead for the first time in the match mid-way through the second half after a try to Will Genia, however the Scots hit back through flanker Hamish Watson five minutes later and thwarted Australia’s late charge to emerge five-point winners.

Six Nations star, flyhalf Finn Russell continued his hot form for Scotland scoring a try and landing a perfect three-from-three with the boot to guide the visitors home. Read more
