Schwab and Hahn join Brisbane Lions

The Brisbane Lions have appointed Peter Schwab to the newly-created role of Head of Coaching and Development.

Schwab, currently the AFL’s Director of Coaching, will oversee the management of coaching staff in the Club’s football department, while providing support to Senior Coach, Justin Leppitsch.

He will officially start his new role in November. Read more

Leppitsch appointed Lions Senior Coach

The Brisbane Lions are pleased to announce the appointment of Justin Leppitsch as Senior Coach.

Leppitsch, who played 227 games for the Bears and Lions across 14 seasons, will return to the Club where he made his name as a triple-premiership winning defender, having spent the previous seven years as an assistant coach.

Leppitsch, 37 (he turns 38 on October 1), beat a number of high-calibre candidates for the position and this afternoon agreed to a three-year deal, effective immediately. Read more

End of an Era for West Coast

West Coast Eagles senior coach John Worsfold today resigned from the post he has held for the last 12 years.

The 2006 premiership coach met chief executive officer Trevor Nisbett and chairman Alan Cransberg this morning and told him he did not have the energy to continue.

The highly respected Worsfold – the most revered figure in the 27-year history of the club – told Nisbett he had nothing left to give. Read more

Brisbane Lions’ Senior Coach Update

The Brisbane Lions’ Senior Coach selection process will continue to progress after receiving approval from all Club Directors.

Brisbane Chairman, Angus Johnson, today sought a resolution from the Board to continue with the process, with all Directors approving its official commencement.

The process includes the appointment of a sub-committee, to be chaired by Dean Warren, the Lions’ General Manager – Football Operations. Read more

Lions to make new home at Springfield

The Brisbane Lions’ new elite training and administration facility (ETAF) will be developed as part of a wider regional sport and community recreation precinct at Springfield Central, it was announced today.

The world-class facility, expected to be completed in mid-2016, will be the centrepiece of the new sports and recreation precinct, to be developed adjacent to Springfield Central Railway Station.

Federal Minister for Regional Australia, Hon Catherine King MP, joined Lions Chairman, Angus Johnson, and CEO, Malcolm Holmes, for the announcement this morning at Springfield Central, alongside AFL General Manager, Football Operations Mark Evans, Federal Member for Blair, Hon Shayne Neumann MP, Federal Member for Oxley, Hon Bernie Ripoll MP, Springfield Land Corporation Deputy Chairman, Bob Sharpless and Cr David Morrison from the Ipswich City Council. Black to break Club record

The Brisbane Lions’ Simon Black will today become the Brisbane AFL games record-holder when he lines up for his 319th senior AFL match against the Fremantle Dockers – surpassing Marcus Ashcroft’s previous feat for the Brisbane-based Lions and Bears of 318 games.

It will prove another significant honour for Black, who in Round Five, 2012 became the first player in VFL/AFL history to have played 300 games, won a Brownlow, been part of a Premiership, and won a Norm Smith Medal.

Black made his debut in Round One, 1998 against the Bulldogs at the Gabba and in 1999 finished third in the AFL’s Rising Star Award behind behind Sydney’s Adam Goodes and Adelaide’s Brett Burton. Read more

Lions Club Champion re-signs

Brisbane Lions reigning Club Champion Joel Patfull has committed to the Brisbane Lions by signing a new deal which will see him at the Club until at least the end of 2015.

Patfull, 28, joins fellow Free Agent Daniel Merrett in re-signing with the Club in recent weeks.

The South Australian product joined the Lions in 2005 after being delisted by Port Adelaide, and has gone on to pay dividends as a solid and reliable member of the Lions’ back six. Read more

Giants announce key re-signings

The Greater Western Sydney Giants are pleased to announce they have re-signed another seven of their young players to long term agreements with the club.

Jonathon Patton, Dom Tyson, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Andrew Phillips and Sam Frost have all agreed to contract extensions until the end of 2015. Curtly Hampton and Aidan Corr have agreed to commit to the club until the end of 2016.

They follow the re-signings last year of 13 young players including Jeremy Cameron, Stephen Coniglio, Toby Greene, Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith, Adam Treloar and Tomas Bugg who, along with Tyson, were the Giants’ record eight AFL Rising Star nominations in 2012. Read more

Adcock the new Lions co-captain

Jed Adcock has today been announced as the Brisbane Lions’ new co-captain.

Adcock, 27, will share the captaincy duties in 2013 with Jonathan Brown, who has led the team as sole skipper since 2009.

He becomes the eighth player in the history of the merged Club to lead the team. Read more

Eagles re-sign Schofield

Rebounding West Coast Eagles defender Will Schofield has today signed a three-year contract extension with the club.

Schofield, who has become an important element in the team structure in the past couple of years, will now remain with the Eagles until at least the end of the 2016 season.

After making his debut in 2007, Schofield played 15 games to the end of 2009, but then began to cement his place in the defensive half and has played 63 of 71 games in the past three years. Read more
