West Coast Eagles young gun Andrew Gaff has extended his contract for a further two years, to the end of 2014, and is looking forward to being a part of the club’s quest for its fourth premiership.
Gaff, 19, was secured with selection four in the 2010 draft and played 17 impressive games in his debut season. A talented midfielder he finished the season strongly and earned a Rising Star nomination.
His decision to re-sign is an important plank in the club’s platform of retaining its developing players as it seeks further success. Read more
Ben Rutten and Brent Reilly were among six recipients of Life Membership at the Adelaide Football Club’s 2012 Season Launch at the Westpac Centre on Tuesday night.
At West Lakes, players are eligible for Life Membership after they reach 100 games and 10 years of service to the Club, and when appropriately endorsed by the Board.
Recruited from West Adelaide with pick No.40 in the 2002 Rookie Draft and elevated the same year, Rutten made his debut against Fremantle at Subiaco in July 2003. Read more
The Greater Western Sydney Giants and Sydney Swans will play for the White Ribbon Trophy in the inaugural Sydney Derby at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
The announcement was made at Tuesday’s press conference at Luna Park overlooking the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge by White Ribbon chairman Andrew O’Keefe along with the GWS Giants’ Luke Power and Kevin Sheedy and the Swans’ Adam Goodes and John Longmire.
White Ribbon is an organisation that is working to prevent the most common and pervasive form of male violence – that towards women. One in three Australian women over the age of 15 has reported experiencing physical or sexual violence at some time in their lives. Read more
The West Coast Eagles, along with every other club in the Australian football community, is deeply saddened by the passing of Melbourne legend Jim Stynes.
Chief executive Trevor Nisbett said Stynes was one of the great success stories of the game, but his contribution to our game was much broader.
“Jim Stynes will be remembered as the player who most successfully made the adjustment from another sport to Australian football,” Mr Nisbett said. Read more

The Brisbane Lions today announced the Club’s inaugural Hall of Fame celebration would be held in Melbourne on Saturday, June 23 – the night of the Lions’ Round 13 clash against the Western Bulldogs.
The announcement was made simultaneously in Brisbane and Melbourne, with Lions Chairman Angus Johnson, CEO Malcolm Holmes, Senior Coach Michael Voss and star midfielder Simon Black joined via video-link from Melbourne by former Fitzroy captain Garry Wilson, former Fitzroy player and Fitzroy and Brisbane Bears coach Robert Walls and triple-premiership winning Brisbane Lions defender Chris Johnson.
The Lions’ Hall of Fame will honour the greatest players, coaches and administrators in the Club’s unique history, with Melbourne’s Crown Palladium chosen to host the first induction. Read more

Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown has been ruled out for the remainder of the Pre-Season Cup after sustaining a fractured cheekbone during a training drill this morning.
Brown will be sidelined for six weeks with scans taken this afternoon revealing the fracture.
The injury is unrelated to those that Brown sustained in 2011. He will have surgery tonight. Read more

Brisbane Lions captain Jonathan Brown will make his long-awaited return to action in Saturday night’s round-robin Pre-Season Cup matches against Gold Coast and Melbourne at Metricon Stadium.
It will be the Lions skipper’s first appearance since Round 17 last year when injury cut short his season.
Lions coach Michael Voss named Brown in an unplaced squad of 34, alongside fellow senior players Simon Black, Jed Adcock and Matt Maguire. Read more
Sydney Swans coach John Longmire today unveiled the Swans 2012 player leadership group, featuring new faces Ted Richards and Nick Smith.
Richards and Smith will join re-appointed co-captains Adam Goodes and Jarrad McVeigh, along with Jude Bolton, Ryan O’Keefe, Rhyce Shaw, Kieren Jack and Jarred Moore in the nine-player group.
Adam Goodes’ re-appointment will see him lead the Club for the fourth successive year, while McVeigh will continues as a co-captain following his appointment at the start of the 2011 season. Read more
Rising Brisbane Lions midfield star Jack Redden has today re-signed with the Club for a further three years.
In further exciting news for the Club’s future, Redden, 21, becomes the latest in a number of midfield and emerging stars committing to the Lions for an extended period.
Redden has, remarkably, not missed a senior match since making his debut in 2009 and enjoyed a particularly stellar season in 2011 – he finished inside the top three at the Club in total disposals, marks and tackles, and laid the second most amount of tackles out of any player across the AFL. Premier Colin Barnett today announced Perth’s new multi-purpose stadium would be built on the Burswood Peninsula and is scheduled for completion in 2018.
The new Perth Stadium will have the third-biggest capacity in Australia and will be the second largest AFL home stadium.
It will have a capacity of 60,000 seats with provision for future expansion to 70,000 seats in the style of Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium, with similar views, amenities and comfort. Read more
