Dolphins impress while Cats strut continues

VFL Wrap - Round 19

Footy '06 @ Sports Australia Frankston continued its stunning resurgence at the weekend, recording an impressive 52-point win at home against Sandringham, reducing the reigning premiers to successive losses for the first time this season.

Sunday’s result lifted the Dolphins the sixth position, while Sandringham is now under pressure from Geelong to hang onto the second spot it has held all year.

Werribee (19.14.128) defeated North Ballarat (11.7.73) at Austar Arena.

Werribee were looking to consolidate fifth spot on the ladder and they did so against a North Ballarat outfit that tried hard but were not able to stop spearhead James Podsiadly, who again kicked a bag of goals.

Podsiadly kicked six goals and exciting midfielder Robert Castello was best for the Tigers.

Geelong (14.18.102) defeated Port Melbourne (13.6.84) at Skilled Stadium.

Geelong again proved they will be a threat in September as they defeated a Port Melbourne outfit that has been competitive against all opposition during the second half of the season.

Kent Kingsley continued his consistent form booting four goals and Paul Koulouriotis racked up 47 possessions to be best on ground for the Cats.

The Northern Bullants (24.14.164) defeated the Bendigo Bombers (8.4.52) at Australian Motor Finance Oval.

The Bullants have been the form side of the competition, losing only one game, and their chances of tasting success in September have improved significantly in recent weeks as Sandringham has faltered in its run to the line.

Digby Morrell kicked five goals and Trent Sporn was best for the second consecutive match.

Williamstown (21.13.139) defeated Tasmania (7.13.55) at Burbank Oval.

Tasmania were looking to continue the good record they have against Williamstown but this never eventuated as the Seagulls recorded yet another impressive home win before heading into the finals after a bye this week.

Heath Lawry kicked six goals in a best-on-ground performance for the Seagulls.

The Box Hill Hawks (21.16.142) defeated the Casey Scorpions (11.13.79) at Box Hill City Oval.

Box Hill recorded its most impressive win of the season while the Scorpions’ slide continues, with both teams out of the 2006 finals race.

Tim Boyle kicked give goals and Matt Little was best for the Hawks.

Frankston (19.11.125) defeated Sandringham (10.13.73) at Frankston City Oval.

Sandringham’s chances of joining a select group of teams to win three consecutive premierships has looked slimmer during the second half of this season and Frankston will be looking to warm up for the finals against bottom team Port Melbourne in the final round.

Aaron Edwards kicked six goals and Chris Fortnam was again named best for the Dolphins.

The Coburg Tigers had a bye this week.
