Anstey wins back-to-back NBL honours


NBL Philips Championship Melbourne Tigers centre Chris Anstey has collected his second National Basketball League (NBL) Philips Player of the Week award in as many week’s after taking our the honour for Round 17.

Anstey won the NBL’s weekly honours for the second consecutive week with a pair of impressive performances against title contenders that helped the Tigers to extend their current win streak to six games. Anstey dominated throughout both his side’s Round 17 Philips Championship victories, averaging 23.5 points, 11.0 rebounds 6.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 blocks for the week.

The Tigers defeated the Adelaide 36ers last Wednesday night 111-104 at the Derwent Centre in Hobart, with Anstey collecting 24 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and two steals.

Melbourne then returned to ‘The Cage’ on Friday evening where they recorded a 13-point victory over the Wollongong Hawks, 103-89. Anstey again led the way for the Tigers, collecting a second double-double performance for the round with 23 points and 11 rebounds in a dominant performance.

Anstey is the first player this season to win back-to-back Philips Player of the week honours and joins Sydney’s CJ Bruton as only the players in 2005/06 to win the award twice.

Anstey narrowly edged out New Zealand Breakers import Brian Green for the weekly honours. Green collected 34 points, four rebounds and three assists as the Breakers upset the Cairns Taipans 118-103 in New Zealand.

Other players in the running for the Philips Player of the Week award for Round 17 included Aaron Trahair (Hunter), Geordie Cullen (Hunter), Dusty Rychart (Adelaide), Jacob Holmes (Adelaide), Larry Abney (Townsville), Cortez Groves (Wollongong), Darnell Mee (Cairns), Chris Burgess (Cairns), Pero Vasiljevic (West Sydney), Rhys Carter (West Sydney), Rich Melzer (New Zealand), Mark Worthington (Sydney), CJ Bruton (Sydney), Derek Rucker (Brisbane) and Bobby Brannen (Brisbane).

For winning the Philips Player of the Week award this round, Anstey will receive one of Philips latest products.
