Brauer crashes out
Australian alpine skier Jonathon Brauer ended a disappointing Olympic campaign for both himself and the alpine
skiing team, on day 15 of competition at the Winter Olympics.
Brauer failed to finish his first run, after crashing out and was not the only one to struggle on a course
which saw 29 other competitors including American star Bode Miller fail to progress to the next round.
Despite his own poor showing at these games, he has vowed to improve in all disciplines and to represent
his country at a few more Olympics yet.
"I've had better days," Brauer said on the AOC website, who did not finish the combined event on 14
February (day four).
"I think I caught an outside edge and high-sided. Just a bit unlucky, but that's life."
Brauer is better known as a slalom specialist, but impressed all in the Australian camp by performing extremely well on three training runs prior to both the downhill and combined events.
"We'll ski the European Cup finals and I'll do a little more downhill and get back into giant slalom and Super G as well, and just do my best in all disciplines,” Brauer said.
After just missing out on selection for Salt Lake four years ago, Brauer has enjoyed his first Olympic
experience and is looking to do it again… for a few more years yet.
"It's a great experience, it's a great vibe here and not many people get to go to the Olympics, so I'm just
stoked to be here after (missing out on) Salt Lake," he said.
He said he was disappointed with his two performances, but is looking to the future and believes that he
can improve.
"I'm a bit bummed with my two races, but that's how it happens. I'll just have to make up for it next time:
2010, 2014, 2018 ... if I can walk I'll be there."
Emily Rosemond finished 3rd in quarter final 1 of the 1000 metres, but unfortunately failed to progress to
the semi finals.
Korea’s Sun-Yu Jin recorded a time of 1:32.859 seconds to claim the Gold medal, ahead of Chinese skaters
Wang Meng 1:33.079 (silver) and Yang Yang 1:33.937 (bronze).
The quartet of Elliott Shriane, Lachlan Hay, Mark McNee and Stephen Lee finished 1st in the B final of the
5000 metres relay.
Korea 6:34.376 took Gold, with Canada 6:43.707 (silver) and the USA 6:47.990 (bronze) rounding out the
medals.
Australia comes away for these Winter Olympics, finishing 17th overall in the medal tally with two medals,
one of each of Gold and silver.
