Victorian Twenty20 Cup Quarter Finals Review

Cricket '06 @ Sports Australia The four Twenty20 quarter finals matches were played last night with Frankston Peninsula knocking off Camberwell, Fitzroy-Doncaster thrashed North Melbourne, Richmond easily disposing of St Kilda and Footscray-Edgewater in a thriller over Carlton.

At Frankston Peninsula's Butler Oval, the Camberwell Magpies batted first and posted 8/147 from their 20 overs. Magpies skipper Damian Shanahan was the cornerstone of the innings with 60 off 49 balls. For the Heat, speedster Scott Phillips was the pick of the bowlers with 2/19 from four, and Mal Coutts also picked up two wickets.

Set 148 for victory, the Heat got off to a flyer courtesy of Kennedy Obuya who smashed a quick fire 35. Obuya was well supported by Steve Stubbings (20) and Roshan Perera (22). But the hero of the match was Heat 'keeper, Dave Nankervis who blazed an unbeaten 24 from just 10 balls, including a massive six over the scoreboard with three balls to spare to bring up victory for the Heat.

At Schramms Reserve, Fitzroy-Doncaster batted first and racked up 7/168 with Chris Street smashing 45 from just 24 balls and Peter Dickson (41 not out) provided ample support. North Melbourne, set 169 to win, were never in the hunt losing too many quick wickets. Only North skipper Darren Dempsey with 67 can hold his head high.

North finished up on 9/143, 26 short of victory.

At Junction Oval, Richmond batted first and made a very good 5/162 with Tigers' skipper Ian Hewett crunching six sixes in his 66 not out from 36 balls. Hewett also was the star with the ball for the Tigers taking 3/23 and helped restrict St Kilda to 8/143. Gareth Cross (48 from 35) was the only Saint to get going.

At Princes Park, Carlton were shot out for just 111 by the Bulldogs with Shane Jones grabbing 4/23 and Anthony Cristofaro taking 3/23 destroying the Blues middle order.

Footscray-Edgewater were never troubled in the run chase with Under 18 Commonwealth Bank Cup star, Ben Gunn crunching 40 and Matthew Love supporting with 23. The Bulldogs got the target with four wickets in hand.

The two Twenty20 Cup Semi Finals will be played on Tuesday 31st January at 5:15pm. Frankston Peninsula host Richmond, and Fitzroy-Doncaster host Footscray-Edgewater.
