Friday January 27, 2006 Cricket :: WACA/Western Warriors

Warriors Stars on Show in Perth One-Dayer

Cricket '06 @ Sports Australia The WACA will showcase the stars of Western Australian cricket in Sunday's Australia vs Sri Lanka VB Series match, with five Western Warriors named in the Australian squad this morning.

Adam Gilchrist, Mike Hussey, Damien Martyn, Brad Hogg and Brett Dorey have all been named in the 13 man squad for Sunday's crucial fixture, with a berth in the VB Series finals on the line.

If the quintet all make the final 12 for the match it will be the most Western Australians in an Australian team since five took the field in the Test match between Australia and Zimbabwe at the SCG in October 2003.

In that match Justin Langer, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist, Brad Hogg and Brad Williams represented Australia.

WACA Chief Executive Officer Tony Dodemaide said that the possibility that five of the Australian 12 for Sunday's match would be Warriors was an exciting one.

"For a sell out crowd at the WACA to be able to see five of their own take the field for Australia is fantastic," Dodemaide said.

"Having five Warriors in the Australian team is a great achievement for Western Australian cricket."

In another boost to Western Australian cricket the two senior leadership positions in the team will be filled by Warriors.

With the Australian selectors resting Captain Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist will again lead the team with Mike Hussey as his deputy.

Australian Squad:
Adam Gilchrist (C), Michael Hussey (VC), Stuart Clark, Michael Clarke, Brett Dorey, Brad Hodge, Brad Hogg, James Hopes, Simon Katich, Brett Lee, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath and Andrew Symonds.

One to be omitted and Supersub to be named on the day of the match.

Sunday's match is a sell out with play commencing at 1:30pm. Gates open at 10:30am for Members and 11:30am for the public.

Note: Channel 9 has announced they will show the match live into Perth.
