Waratahs Unveils Unique Trophy for Pre-Season Clash
A 19th century ship has provided the inspiration for a unique 21st century trophy struck in recognition of the
New South Wales Waratahs annual pre-season clash with New Zealand rivals the Crusaders.
A fully functional, brass mounted bell has been made in honour of the first Waratahs to tour New Zealand in
1882.
A squad of just 16 players made the trip on the SS Rotomahana which ran aground in Auckland Harbour.
“It’s a great story because this ship really kicked off international touring by Rugby teams,” said NSW
head coach Ewen McKenzie.
“They played seven games on that inaugural visit to New Zealand and fittingly they beat Canterbury 7-2 so
that’s not a bad omen.”
The Waratahs have secured a 5 year deal with the Crusaders for the annual pre-season encounter at Aussie
Stadium.
“We’ve got a great rivalry with the Crusaders and it’s obviously at an all-time high,” said NSW CEO Fraser
Neill.
“I can’t think of a better way to begin the first Rotomahana Challenge than a rematch of the 2005 Super 12
Final.”
Neill said the match also presented the opportunity for supporters to see the Waratahs before they embark
on a lengthy road trip.
“This year’s draw sees us in Queensland first then South Africa so I know Chris Whitaker and the rest of
the squad are hoping for a big crowd next weekend to help launch them into the Super 14 competition.
“It’s our aim that the Rotomahana Challenge will become a popular pre-season match in the tradition of all
Waratahs – Crusaders clashes.”
