Green wins first NBL weekly award
New Zealand Breakers import Brian Green has captured his first ever National Basketball League (NBL) Philips
Player of the Week award after taking out the honour with two outstanding Round 22 Philips Championship
performances.
The 193cm forward was inspirational for the Breakers in Round 22, as his side went 2-0 against top-eight
sides the Sydney Kings and Hunter Pirates. Green averaged 25.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0
steal for the week.
Having played just 15 NBL games with the Breakers, Green has found his feet and proven invaluable for
New Zealand in the latter part of the season. The Breakers recorded an impressive 116-98 win over the Pirates
on Friday night in Newcastle, with the American collecting a game-high 26 points, seven rebounds, four assists
and one steal.
Green then backed up on Sunday as the Breakers brought the stunning home run of the Sydney Kings to an end
with an upset 115-104 victory over the minor premiers at the Sydney Entertainment Centre.
New Zealand are the first team this season to record a win over the Kings at home and Green led from the
front again, bagging 27 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Green is the second New Zealand player in three weeks to win the weekly award, team mate Rich Melzer having
taken out the honour in Round 20.
Perth’s Shawn Redhage was unlucky to miss out on back-to-back honours after he recorded 27 points, 12
rebounds, four assists and one steal as the Wildcats defeated the Crocodiles 117-84 in Darwin on Sunday.
Other players in the running for the Player of the Week award for Round 22 included Dave Thomas (Melbourne),
Chris Anstey (Melbourne), Ben Melmeth (Hunter), Ben Pepper (New Zealand), Cortez Groves (Wollongong), Mat
Campbell (Wollongong), Chris Burgess (Cairns), Larry Abney (Townsville), Willie Farley (Adelaide), Luke
Kendall (Sydney), Sedric Webber (Sydney), Stephen Black (Brisbane), Sam Mackinnon (Brisbane) and Scott
McGregor (West Sydney).
For winning the Player of the Week award this round, Green will receive one of Philips latest products.
