Sydney FC retain Yorke for coming season

A-League Club - Sydney FC Sydney FC Coach Terry Butcher today assured fans that Dwight Yorke would play with the defending Hyundai A-League champions for the entire 2006/07 season after meeting with his star striker at length after training.

Yorke returned to training yesterday and after his third hit out of the pre season this morning the Sydney FC star spoke at length to Butcher, who missed yesterday’s training sessions due to the A-League Coaches Conference.

“I can categorically say that Dwight Yorke will be playing for Sydney FC this season and not only that he is looking forward to it,” Butcher said. “Dwight is an important part of the club and the team and he will be helping us try to win back-to-back A-League championships.

“Dwight assured me he is 100 per cent behind Sydney FC and that his future lies with us and that’s good enough for me.”

Butcher said he was impressed with the Trinidad & Tobago captain after watching him train with the Sydney FC team mates for the first time this morning.

“He has a tremendous amount of respect amongst the players,” Butcher said. “He adds something to the group by coming in and as Captain of the team he is important.

“Dwight had a tremendous season last year from all accounts and he was unbelievable at the World Cup over the (northern hemisphere) Summer so we are all hoping he can build on that for Sydney FC and set the A-League alight.

Butcher said he was looking forward to having a fully fit Yorke to inject into the Sydney FC team as the countdown to the start of the Hyundai A-League gathers momentum.

“Right now he has a lot of work to do, even by his own admission, to get fit for the start of the season and we will endeavour to have him ready for a few Pre Season matches but the main aim is the A-League opener against the Mariners,” Butcher said.

Yorke will not be available for Saturday’s Pre Season Cup match against the New Zealand Knights in Auckland, where Sydney FC will be chasing a win to cement its place at the top of Group B in the competition.
