Dragons win at SCG

NRL Telstra Premiership The St George-Illawarra Dragons defeated a gallant South Sydney Rabbitohs 28-10 at the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday.

The Rabbitohs played well, but just weren’t good enough to beat a Dragons side that went in boasting of a stunning revival in form.

A grubber kick by Dean Young saw the first try posted in the 26th minute when Matt Cooper latched onto the offload out wide, bit of controversy though as referee Paul Simpkins missed a knock-on in the lead up.

More points followed for the Dragons when Souths half-back Mick Moran missed the little grubber kick by Ben Hornby, and allowed Michael Ennis over. Aaron Gorrell missed the conversion attempt from right in front of the posts.

Souths did, however, get on the board with their first try a minute before the main break. A perfectly timed pass from Moran saw Brad Watts cross in the corner, Roy Bell landed the sideline conversion with the Dragons lead cut back to just two points, 8-6.

Corey Payne barged over four minutes into the second half, both defences then held out numerous attempts for major points until Souths broke through with John Sutton sending Moran over.

With six minutes to play misfortune and handling errors cost the Rabbitohs with both Bell and Adam MacDougall losing the ball, though Bell was harsh done by when stripped of the ball. Rookie full-back Wes Naiqama scored the Dragons fourth try of the game and, with Gorrell finding the middle, the Dragons led 18-10.

Colin Best rounded out a good day for the Dragons with a double in the last ten minutes of the match.
