Hewitt advances while Flip flops

Wimbledon Review

Both top seed Roger Federer and third seed Lleyton Hewitt advanced to the third round at Wimbledon this morning with convincing victories, while Australian wildcard and former Wimbledon finalist Mark Phillipousis was bundled out of the tournament by Australian Open champion Marat Safin in straight sets.

Federer swept past Czech Ivo Minar 6-4 6-4 6-1 to take his unbeaten streak on grass to 31 matches. Minar was solid in the first set with his strong groundstrokes, but the two-time Wimbledon champion was always in control with his all-court style of play and eventually overwhelmed his opponent to force a third-round match-up with German Nicolas Kiefer, who beat Italian Alessio Di Mauro in straight sets.

Hewitt had a tougher day at the office than his Swiss rival, beating Czech Jan Hernych 6-2 7-5 3-6 6-3 to set up a clash with American Justin Gimelstob, who knocked out 29th seed and Olympic gold medallist, Chilean Nicolas Massu.

Earlier in the day, fifth seed Safan out-blasted a clearly unfit Phillipousis to go through to the third round in a tournament last year he said he’d never return to.

Safan won the first two sets in his 7-6 7-6 6-4 victory in tiebreakers, but amazingly didn’t even hold a break-point opportunity while Phillipousis spurned five in that time, including three in one game that would have seen him serve for the first set.

But after he lost the second-set tiebreaker, the Australian was visibly feeling the effects of an ankle injury that he had treatment for at the end of the first set, and was always going to get rolled by the charismatic Russian.

Ninth seed Sebastian Grosjean finally finished off determined Frenchman Michael Llodra 3-6 7-5 4-6 7-6 6-4 to advance to the second round, after their day two clash was delayed.

In other matches, 11th seed Joachim Johansson ended the hopes of big-serving Briton Greg Rusedski, winning in four exciting sets 7-6 3-6 6-4 7-6 in a match that went into the night, while dangerous Croat, 10th seed Mario Ancic, went past Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-3.

On the women’s side, all the big names got through, although some easier than others. Top seed Lindsay Davenport, third seed Amelie Mauresmo, Kim Clijsters and Anastasia Myskina all cruised through to the third round with simple straight-set victories, while Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Likhovtseva had a tougher time advancing.

Davenport set up a third-round battle with Marat Safin’s sister, Dinara Safina, after crushing fellow American Jamea Jackson 6-0 6-3. Mauresmo had a similar scoreline in her win over Spaniard Maria Sanchez Lorenzo, the Frenchwoman winning 6-1 6-3 in her quest for a maiden Grand Slam win.

Clijsters monstered American Marissa Irvin to win 6-1 6-1, and the Belgian slugger could face Davenport in the fourth round if she gets past Italian Roberta Vinci.

The match of the day was sixth seed Elena Dementieva’s battle with German Sabine Klaschka, which the Russian eventually took out 2-6 6-3 8-6, while compatriot Kuznetsova also took three sets to get past improved Indian Sania Mirza 6-4 7-6 6-4.
