Wildcard wins in wild weather

A wildcard and a qualifier took out the mens and ladies Helensvale Grand Prix top prizes in cold blustery winter like conditions on the Gold Coast.

Shane Globits, received a wildcard entry into the Grand Prix after winning the Australian Open and Super Singles earlier in the year and wrapped up the final with an emphatic 11/3:10:1 victory over Australian Squad member Brett Duprez.

Barbara Thompson, from Ipswich United, qualified last week into the main draw and then played superbly to conquer Arleen Jeffery 8/7:8/4 in the final of the Ladies Singles.

Earlier in the day Barrie Lester from Victoria teamed up with local BA Squad member Nathan Rice to win a thrilling pairs final against Brett Duprez and Kelvin Kerkow.

Both teams were level at one set all and one end all in the three-end tiebreak. Kerkow held two shots until Rice with his final bowl trailed the jack to claim victory in an excellent match. Final scores 3/12:10/6:2/1.

The attention now shifts to the International Test Series between Australia, New Zealand and Wales coming up on July 12,13,14 at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club.

Bill Cornehls, Nathan Rice and Mark Casey will play for Australia.
