Sandringham continue good form

VFL Wrap - Round 11

Footy '06 @ Sports Australia Sandringham (22.10.142) defeated the Bendigo Bombers (17.11.113) at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday.

Sandringham, who has had an indifferent first half of the season after winning last year’s premiership, continued the good form that has seen them string successive wins together in recent weeks.

Nick Sautner booted six goals for the Zebras and Ezra Poyas was named best on ground.

The Northern Bullants (17.15.117) defeated North Ballarat (11.10.76) at Australian Motor Finance Oval.

After struggling for consistency in recent years at finals time, the Bullants have proved so far this season that they are one of several sides capable of challenging Sandringham’s attempt at a third straight premiership.

Digby Morrell and Daniel Harford, both recently retired from the AFL have injected a new level of professionalism that the entire playing group at the Bullants have embraced and both are now shining in leadership roles.

Carlton youngster Josh Kennedy kicked five goals in a best on ground performance for the Bullants.

Geelong (16.17.103) defeated Tasmania (13.19.97) at Skilled Stadium.

Tasmania have been decimated by injuries this season and this has lead to them being unable to play any sort of consistent football or win matches on a regular basis against any opposition put up against them.

Matthew McCarthy got back into form as he kicked four goals for the Cats, with Paul Koulouriotis named best on ground.

At Casey Fields, the Casey Scorpions (22.21.153) completely outclassed a hapless Port Melbourne outfit (8.9.57).

The Scorpions have had a new injection of young talent this season and with a plentiful supply of St Kilda players such as Mark McGough, the team once labelled cellar dwellers of the competition are now performing consistently each week.

Port Melbourne on the other hand, have struggled to compete against all competition put against them and a lack of depth due to no longer having an AFL alignment has hurt them dearly.

Barry Brooks, David Biagi and Brad Scalzo all kicked four goals, with Biagi being named best on ground for the Scorpions.

At Box Hill City Oval, the Coburg Tigers (15.17.107) defeated the Box Hill Hawks (8.13.61).

After finishing last season in 12th position and struggling to play a brand of football that would inflict any sort of dominance against most opposition, a rejuvenated Coburg side is sitting in third position and coach Andy Collins has injected a new level of confidence into the playing group.

Jay Schulz continued his stellar form, kicking six goals in another best on ground performance for the Tigers.

Werribee (19.10.124) defeated Williamstown (17.8.110) in front of a huge crowd at Burbank Oval.

After losing the first Western Derby earlier in the season, Werribee were coming off consecutive wins and looking to build a much more consistent second half of the 2006 season which they did with a dominant last quarter display.

James Podsiadly kicked five goals and defender Michael Sleeman was named best on ground.
