World Cup benefits filters down to Sydney FC

A-League Club - Sydney FC World Cup Fever has had an immediate effect on football in Sydney with Hyundai A-League champions Sydney FC set to double its membership and season ticket numbers for the upcoming 2006/07 season.

With eight weeks to go before the start of the second season, Sydney FC has already accumulated more members and has more season ticket holders than last year, when it won the inaugural Grand Final.

The boom in membership and season ticket sales could see Sydney FC pocket more than $1 million in membership revenue, a significant increase for the 2006/07 season.

“The response has been phenomenal,” said Sydney FC CEO Tim Parker. “We had enormous interest even before the World Cup started but since the World Cup we have been inundated by membership and season ticket requests.

“The success of the A-League in season one has given people comfort in the viability of the game in this country and the World Cup has just harnessed even more interest.

“The way it is going we could have more than double the number of members and season ticket holders for season two, which is a tremendous result for the game and Sydney FC.

“We have had a combination of fans renewing memberships and also new season ticket holders and members coming on board, which is encouraging for the club.”

The first season saw 2,500 people become members and 2,700 buy season tickets and that number has already been eclipsed. Statistics from last year also showed the largest volume of members joined the club in the last two weeks before the start of the Hyundai A-League season.

“We know that there will be a big rush towards the start of the season so we are bracing ourselves,” Parker said. “There is a massive market out there for football in Sydney, and indeed Australia, and we see this interest as the awakening of those people who have always loved the game but never had anything tangible to attach themselves too.”

Season Tickets, which include all 10 home matches at Aussie Stadium, start at $56 for juniors and $153 for adults, with a family pass also available for $360. Sydney FC also has Junior ($25) and Club Membership ($69), which does not include season tickets.

Sydney FC will take on the Central Coast Mariners in a grand final replay to kick off the new season at Aussie Stadium on Sunday August 27.

The two most popular membership packages have been the higher end (Platinum Plus) and The Cove membership, which illustrated the heartbeat of Sydney FC’s support in the inaugural season.

The Cove, which last year attracted 500 members, has been tripled in size with more than 800 people already purchasing season tickets in the area for the 2006/07 season.

Membership categories
Platinum Plus: (adult $690)
Platinum: (adult $248, concession $188, junior $140 and family $640)
Silver: (adult $188, concession $140, junior $100 and family $480)
Bronze: (junior $56 and family $360)
The Cove: (adult $153 and concession $110)
Club Membership: $69
Junior Membership: $25

Platinum Plus, Platinum, Silver and The Cove memberships include a dedicated seat for the season while Bronze Membership offers a season pass for the general admission area of Aussie Stadium. Club and Junior Memberships are the only categories that do not include a season pass.

Membership information is available on the Sydney FC website.
