Australians lift Gold and Silver
Australia has taken out first and second with a powerful display of strength in the Men’s +105 weightlifting
tonight.
Adelaide-born Chris Rae took out the Gold with a combined total of 388 kilograms, just beating out
compatriot Damon Joseph Kelly, who posted an impressive total of 385 kilograms.
Nauru’s Itte Detenamo took out Bronze, well ahead of the rest of the field.
It only took two rounds of the snatch to determine this was a two horse race, with Rae and Kelly lifting
172 and 167 kilograms respectively, leaving Detenamo far back in third with 150.
With the snatch and grab left to determine which way the top two placings would go, Rae lifted over 200
kilograms with his first two attempts (205, 216) before failing at an ambitious third attempt of 230.
Kelly completed all three of his lifts in this section, including a Games record lift of 217 kilograms with
his final attempt, but it wasn’t enough to claim Gold.
Rae’s win pushes Australia to the top of the weightlifting medals chart with four Golds, ahead of India and
Canada with three each.
