Knights sign Gagai; re-sign Rochow and Smith
Monday May 28, 2012
The Newcastle Knights are pleased to announce the signing of Dane Gagai, as well as re-signing forward Robbie Rochow and NYC five-eighth Will Smith.
Wayne Bennett, who coached Gagai’s father at the Brisbane Broncos, said the young utility was a target for a number of Club’s since the Broncos released him last month.
“Plenty of scouts have been trying to get Dane since he left the Broncos and it is fantastic he has chosen to come to the Knights,” Bennett said.
“There is no doubting his playing ability; he has been a regular in the schoolboy representative teams and is highly regarded by all judges of the game.
“Dane felt the Knights were the right fit for him and we hope our environment here will allow him to reach his full potential.”
The 21-year-old, who can play in the centres, on the wing and at fullback, looks forward to continuing his career in Newcastle.
“I am really glad I have decided on my future and excited to be going to the Knights,” Gagai said.
“Wayne coached my father and I look forward to now playing under Wayne as well.”
Gagai has signed with the Knights until the end of the 2014 season and will take part in his first training session on Tuesday.
Meanwhile forward Robbie Rochow, who in his first season with the Knights, has re-signed until the end of 2014 and young five-eighth Will Smith has re-signed until the end of the 2013 season.
