The Western Australian Cricket Association has announced a preliminary Western Fury squad of 21 for the 2010-11 Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) and Women’s Twenty20 competitions.

New additions to the squad are Melville all-rounder Emma Biss and South African duo Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk. Wicket-keeper Emily Rixon is the only omission from the 2009-10 list.

Biss, 20, was a member of the Western Fury squad in 2007-08 and was invited to train with the team last summer following strong performances in the SunSmart District competition.

She was part of a 12-strong Fury team that met the ACT Meteors in a Women’s Twenty20 match last December.

20-year old Kapp is an all-rounder from Port Elizabeth who represented South Africa at the 2009 ICC Women’s World Cup in Australia and the 2009 ICC Women’s World Twenty20, while 17-year old leg-spinner van Niekirk also debuted at last year’s Women’s World Cup and has been a regular in the Proteas team since then.

The players have been invited to a session with Head Coach Steve Philippe and WACA Cricket Operations Manager Andrew Scotford to outline expectations ahead of the 2010-11 season, after which time the squad will be finalised.
