Sellathurai and Russo both finish seventh

2005 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships - Melbourne

2005 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships - Melbourne Australian male gymnast Prasanth Sellathurai has finished seventh in the pommel horse final after scoring 9.037 at the World Gymnastics Championships, this afternoon.

In the medals, China's Xiao Qin claimed the Gold, Romanian Ioan Silviu Suciu the silver and Japan's Takehiro Kashima the bronze.

Sellathurai, who won the Gold medal on pommel during the challenger series against Great Britain, was a bit disappointed with his performance but was happy to make a final at his first World Championships.

"I rushed it. I was getting a little tired towards the end as too. I just had to keep my rhythm but I didn't do it. I got through the difficult part of my routine. I'm disappointed I feel but it's my first final so any experience is good for me. I was probably looking ahead a little bit too. I was very nervous and so that's probably why I rushed."

"I need to have more self confidence and just slow down."

Backing up from last nights all-round final where she won the bronze medal, Monette Russo finished seventh in the uneven bars final behind the USA's Nastia Liukin (Gold), all-round World Champion Chellsie Memmel (Silver) and Great Britain's Beth Tweddle (Bronze).

Russo, who created history last night after winning Australia's first ever all-round gymnastics was awarded 9.412 by the judges and was happy with her performance.

"It was a really good bar routine. They're some good girls out there so I'm just happy with how I went. The other girls had really good routines. I did the best routine I could do so I'm happy with that."

When asked her bronze medal winning performance affected her performance today, Russo said he attempted to let it not distract her.

"I tried to let it not get to me. I was just focused on today. I just treated it like normal."

Russo will be hoping to add last night's bronze, after finishing in fourth on balance beam at this year's challenger series against China.

The Australians in action tomorrow are Damian Istria, competing in the men's high bar final, and Russo backs up again to compete on her favorite apparatus, the balance beam.

Competition commences at 2:00pm (AEDT).
