Bulls win outright
Queensland has defeated Western Australia by an innings and 16 runs late on the third day of the Pura Cup match in Perth.
Martin Love claimed man of the match honours for his six-hour knock of 186 in the first innings, while Mitchell Johnson has pressed for Test duties with seven wickets in the match.
Western Australia crashed badly, losing all 10-119 in 46.1 overs after being in a solid position mid-way through the day at 0-166.
Set 301 to avoid an innings defeat, Warriors openers Justin Langer and Chris Rogers got the home side off to a great start.
Rogers was the more aggressive batsman, taking to the Bulls bowling and smashing 15 fours’ and a six before falling just six runs short of a century in the 45th over.
The Warriors were comfortably placed at lunch, 0/76. Rogers was unbeaten on 47, while Langer consolidating on 28.
Langer was the first dismissed after lunch, caught behind for 67. Mike Hussey’s stay was a brief five balls, following in a similar manner as Langer.
Rogers followed as the Queenslanders, James Hopes and Andrew Symonds, snared the top three wickets within 18 deliveries.
Damien Martyn and Marcus North steadied the innings to the tea interval, and pushed the home side over 200 before Martyn found Symonds out at mid-wicket.
Four down soon became five as Adam Gilchrist went chasing a leg side ball, from Johnson, only to nick through to keeper Hartley. The writing was on the wall, a result today was now possible.
Symonds, Shane Watson and Andy Bichel cleaned up the tail before Johnson returned and collected the final wicket, that of Ben Edmondson in the 88th over.
Play was extended beyond its normal scheduled stumps time with the Warriors eight down. Despite the cloud cover, and fading light, the Bulls claimed victory shortly after 6pm local time.
Earlier, Bichel and Chris Hartley moved the score over 500, after Queensland resumed the day on 7-480. Brad Hogg claimed his fifth wicket – that of Bichel for 32 in the sixth over of the session.
Both batsmen had taken to Ben Edmondson’s bowling with Hartley pounding consecutive balls in the 120th over to the fence.
Hartley followed Bichel 10 balls later, Edmondson gaining some revenge with an edge straight through to keeper Gilchrist. Edmondson finished with 3-114, adding the 10th and final wicket of the innings, Daniel Doran, to his list.
Next match, both teams have a couple days off before returning to the WACA for their Ford Ranger Cup duel.
Meanwhile, both teams are on the road for Round four of Pura Cup action.
New South Wales host the Western Australians, while Queensland takes on Victoria in Melbourne.
Both matches scheduled to begin on Friday November 24.
