Jets clinch draw against Sydney FC

Hyundai A-League The Newcastle Jets have recorded an upset, coming away from Aussie stadium this evening with a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC.

Ante Milicic booted the equalizer in the 76th minute to give the Jets a point in the first of their five consecutive away games.

For Sydney, David Carney sent a powerful strike towards the back of the net which found it’s way there, courtesy of a deflection off Jade North in the 72nd minute.

In slippery conditions for football, the first-half got off to a scrappy start with referee Mark Shield going whistle-happy.

It wasn’t until the 17 minute mark that the first genuine opportunity arose, with midfielder Ufuk Talay sending a pinpoint cross for Iain Fyfe who pushed it agonisingly wide of the post.

The Jets on the counter-attack a minute later were almost in with a fiery Nick Carle strike outside the box almost skidding past the safe-hands of Clint Bolton.

A stunning Dwight Yorke cross, six minutes from half-time, almost had Sydney open the scoring before goalkeeper Liam Reddy thwarted the stunning effort.

At the break Sydney went in with the upper hand having fired off eight shots at goal in comparison to Newcastle’s two.

After half-time, Sydney came out firing with Yorke creating numerous chances on goal with all shots being unsuccessful.

It wasn’t until the 72nd minute that Sydney converted all their attacking pressure onto the scoreboard, with Carney sending down a powerful strike which deflected off North and into the goal.

Four minutes later Newcastle equalized with a costly mistake from Fyfe allowing Franco Parisi to roll the ball back for Ante Milichic who calmly slotted it home.

A last gasp attempt from the Jets in the 83rd minute to clinch victory was denied with a Matthew Thompson strike being blocked in front of goal by a Sydney defender.

Both teams battled hard for the remaining minutes but it was to no avail.

Next week, Sydney face off against Central Coast on Saturday night at the Central Coast Stadium, while the Jets continue their road trip, across the Tasman, for the New Zealand Knights on Friday night at North Harbour Stadium.
