Oliver ousted, Hayes gets the win!
Top Australian Jockey Damien Oliver has been suspended for the next 14 meetings by Victorian Stewards
tonight, dashing his chance of a Cox Plate win on Lad of the Manor.
Oliver was charged for careless riding in two separate races, both his ride in race one on Beau Esprit
and on Let Loushe in race three. His suspension will start on midnight Saturday, after he rides in the
Caulfield Cup upon Pop Rock.
He received 10 meetings for his first race and a further 4 meetings for the ride on Let Loushe. He will
be right to ride again just in time for Derby Day on November the 4th.
Meanwhile, in other racing news, Miss Finland has become just the second filly to take out the Golden
Slipper – Thousand Guineas double after winning the Guineas at Caulfield on Wednesday. Miss Finland left
her run late and won by a half head from stablemate Permaiscuous and Cheeky Choice finished in third.
Permaiscuous who was ridden by Oliver opened up a lead of up to sixth lengths during the middle stages
of the 1600m group one race but a late flurry from favourite Miss Finland ridden by Craig Williams was
enough to get the win.
Williams was happy with the run, saying, "Sometimes Miss Finland tries 110 per cent at the wrong part
of the race, but it was the right part today."
Although it was not all smooth sailing for Williams, "I was happy coming into the entrance of the straight
because I got a good lead into it, but when I straightened and pressed the button she just went a little
wayward, and I was concerned at that point"
The owners and David Hayes now has the decision to make whether to race the filly in next Saturday’s
$3 million Cox Plate. The only filly to have ever won the 2040m race was Surround back in 1976.
