Heenan on comeback trail
Brumbies flanker Daniel Heenan is keen to return to his excellent 2006 Super 14 form and reclaim his position
in the Wallabies’ pack ahead of the 2007 World Cup.
The 24-year-old was outstanding in his first year in Canberra, playing every match for the Brumbies after
moving from the Queensland Reds at the end of the 2005 season.
However, the hefty backrower aggravated a previous shoulder injury during the Qantas Wallabies’ first Test
against England at Telstra Stadium in June. The resulting shoulder reconstruction – the second on his left
shoulder in two years – ruled him out for the remainder of the year.
Heenan, who had a screw inserted into shoulder joint, says the injury was a frustrating way to end the
season.
“It was obviously very disappointing the way it worked out, especially when things appeared to be going
so well,” he said. “But unfortunately that’s part of football and now it’s just a matter of doing what I can
to get back onto the field.
“A decision had to be made on whether to persevere with my shoulder the way it was and see if things got
better. But the best option was to get it fixed up and get a good off-season under my belt.
“It’s been a slow process but I’m beginning to notice more rapid improvement now. But I should be right
to start remedial contact work leading into Christmas and then get into full training in early January.”
Heenan will again be a key member of the Brumbies’ squad bursting with talented backrowers, including
Wallabies George Smith and Stephen Hoiles, current Australian Under 21’s captain Julian Salvi and Fijian-born
powerhouse Jone Tawake.
“We’re very fortunate to have so many quality backrowers,” he said. “Last year proved how important it is
to have depth in key positions. There are always injuries and if you have a number of players who can cover
those key areas then it causes minimal disruption to the rest of the squad. Plus it keeps everyone on their
toes.”
Heenan says he is aiming to be ready for the Brumbies’ first match of the year against the Chiefs in
Hamilton on February 3 in preparation for a possible World Cup berth.
“I suppose it [making the World Cup] is the goal of everyone playing Australian rugby,” he said. “But
hopefully I can leave the injuries behind me and next year all my goals will be fulfilled.”
