Bold declaration opens game for Outright Result

Cricket '06 @ Sports Australia Tasmania has taken first innings points after Western Australia opened the game up for an outright result on the third day of the Pura Cup match in Perth.

At the close, Tasmania was 5-149, leading overall by 349 runs after the Warriors declared at tea on 5-353. A mutual agreement between the captains allowed the home side to close their first innings 200 runs behind without the follow-on being enforced.

George Bailey and Sean Clingeleffer remained unbeaten, while Aaron Heal spun the Tigers top order out with 3-36.

First innings double centurion Tim Paine (56) continued where he left off on Monday morning, wasting little time in helping his team set a competitive target.

With Michael Bevan (46) also getting amongst the runs after opener Michael Di Venuto (1) went cheaply, the Tasmanians are poised to set Western Australia about 400 off 80 overs, enough time for a run chase.

Earlier, Western Australia resumed on 1-133. Justin Langer and Shaun Marsh, along with Marcus North, added 97 runs in the opening session. Marsh was the only wicket to fall in the opening session, trapped infront by Brendan Drew, however not before he registered his 50.

The Warriors went to lunch on 2-240, afterwards it was slow progress in the first hour with neither batsmen prepared to take to the bowlers. Tigers skipper Daniel Marsh made the first breakthrough after lunch, snaring North when he attempted to slog the ball.

North only managed to flick the ball to mid-on and the waiting hands of Brendan Drew. Geeves claimed two wickets in one over, Adam Voges and Sean Ervine both gone for four.

Ronchi raced from 10 to 40, he smashed the ball to all parts in scoring 30 runs off 10 balls during the 93rd and 94th overs, bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus and Adam Griffiths.

At the tea break, Western Australia was 5-353 with Langer and Ronchi unbeaten on 188 and 47 respectively. Brett Geeves was the pick of the bowlers with 2-82 from 20 overs.

Play resumes tomorrow at 10:30am local time.
