Chief Football Writer and Co-Ordinator for Sports Australia since February 2005, Brett completed
his VCE at Dandenong North's Lyndale Secondary College at the end of 2002. He then went on to do a year of
Professional Writing and Editing at Box Hill TAFE in 2003, before being accepted into RMIT University's
Journalism course for 2004. He is now in his second year of the course he aimed to get into since year
seven.
Brett relished his first taste of the world of sports journalism when he did work experience at Inside
Football Magazine and Triple M Radio in year 10. There he learnt the art of interviewing, how to construct
a news story and how to edit radio pieces, as well as crucial researching techniques.
Having whetted the appetite, Brett got his first real break contributing for a Hawthorn Football Club
fansite - Hawk Headquarters - at the start of 2001, where he still writes and helps run the messageboard.
From there he began doing player interviews and feature articles for the official Hawthorn website and
magazine, Hawk Talk, as well as previews and reviews for the Box Hill website in 2002.
A regular contributor to RMIT's Catalyst magazine, Brett has most recently worked for Sportal and has
had stints on radio with LaTrobe University's Sub FM and 90.7 SYN FM, where he co-hosted The Bench Warmers
and is now an occasional football analyst on Kicking Behinds, 10am-12pm on Saturday mornings.
An obsessive Hawthorn supporter, Brett can be found at any Hawthorn game standing, chanting and cursing
his team's luck on the weekends. He claims he will get a tattoo when Hawthorn eventually wins another
flag, but given his fear of anything the least bit hair-raising, this is probably an empty promise.
One of Brett's dreams is to cover the English Premier League for a year in the UK, but his overall
ambition is to be Chief Football Writer for The Age and a radio and television commentator, which he hopes
will earn him enough money to buy a mansion in a leafy boulevard off Hawthorn's Glenferrie Road.
