United gives Perth no Glory

Hyundai A-League Adelaide United played their best football in a long time to easily defeat Perth Glory 3-0 at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Perth Glory started promisingly in the first 10 minutes but then Adelaide United took control and never looked like being threatened.

Fernando Rech opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a fantastic left foot shot when he had no right to score, giving the keeper no chance.

In the 34th minute Travis Dodd found himself with some space on the right and from 25 yards hit a thunderbolt that was only seen late by Glory keeper Aleks Vrteski, and once again he was left to pick the ball out of his own net.

Rech completed the rout in the 50th minute from another quality build up with Dodd and Carl Veart again involved, with a sublime back heel from Shengqing Qu left Rech free to hit another left foot shot which was deflected into the back of the net. The goal was Rech’s fourth of the season and put the final nail in the Glory coffin.

Adelaide United coach John Kosmina said the win against Perth was better than the side's 5-1 victory over Newcastle in round three.

“I think we progressed from last week. It was a good performance (last week) but we got a bit sloppy - tonight we weren't,” he said.

“We still gave the ball away a few times but having said that, we kept trying to play and that was the thing I think that brought about the result.”

“We played some really good stuff, the goals were well-constructed.”

Perth Glory coach Ron Smith said his side made a promising start to the contest but 'lost their way' after Adelaide's first goal.

“Adelaide played well, we had a few structural changes to try and combat them tonight and it didn't quite work in the first half,” he said.

“The second half performance, I was a lot happier with, in terms of our structure.”

“And usually, when you are losing, the game tends to become a bit end to end which it did.”

Next week, the inform Queensland Roar host Adelaide United on Friday night at Suncorp Stadium, while Perth host the Melbourne Victory on Sunday afternoon at Members Equity Stadium.
