Lions roar in WAFL Premiership decider

Subiaco 24. 9 (153) def. South Fremantle 10.10 (70)

Footy '06 @ Sports Australia Subiaco has won the WAFL Premiership for the second time in three years after destroying South Fremantle by 83 points at Subiaco Oval this afternoon.

For the Lions, it was their ninth flag overall and denied the Bulldogs back-to-back titles. South Fremantle defeated Claremont in the 2005 decider 12 months ago.

A 10-goal final term was amongst the highlights as Subiaco crushed any chance South Fremantle had of snatching victory after the three-quarter-time break when there was only 32 points between the teams.

Led by captain Marc Webb and forward Sam Larkins the Lions erased the disappointment of season 2005 in which they bowed out of the finals in straight sets.

Larkins booted eight majors, while Webb won the Simpson medal after being judged best onfield. Others to shine for Subiaco include 2006 Sandover Medallist Matt Priddis, David Robbins and Mark Haynes.

At the other end, Ashley Sampi booted three goals while Paul Duffield, Clint Jones and Theo Adams were amongst the best on a bleak day for the Bulldogs.

South Fremantle made a bright start with Sampi booting two of three early goals. However, inaccurate kicking hindered the charge and Subiaco capitalised booting five straight in the first term.

By half time, Subiaco had stretched the margin out to 18 points with four goals to two. South Fremantle had work ahead of them if they were to carve up the Lions, however things got worse in the third quarter when the Lions slotted the opening two majors after the break.

Duffield finished with a game high 33 possessions for the Bulldogs, while Jones had 23 touches and Daniel Gilmore finished with 15.

Priddis was Subiaco's top possession getter with 28, while Webb and Jarrad Schofield both finished with 26. Luke Newick dominated in the ruck for the Lions, easily beating counterpart Adam Hay.

Mark Nicoski's chances of an AFL recall for the West Coast Eagles next weekend appear slim with limited time onfield for Subiaco, while Sampi pressed for recall, should any changes be made, with a dominant first half for South Fremantle.

Earlier in the day, East Perth won a Colts thriller defeating Claremont by just six points, 13.11 (89) to 11.17 (83). Swan Districts thrashed West Perth by 49 points in the Reserves, winning 12.18 (90) to 6.5 (41).
