Victoria claim 21 and under championship

U21 Nationals Day Six Review

Netball Australia Victoria claimed its 19th 21-and-under national championship after defeating Western Australia 71-49 at ETSA Park in Adelaide on Sunday.

Melbourne Kestrels goaler Caitlin Thwaites continued her excellent Commonwealth Bank Trophy form as she shot 47 goals from 53 percent at 87% underlining why she is one of the best young goalers in Australia.

Victoria finished second on the points table after the end of the preliminary rounds and lost only one game on the way to claiming the championship.

Victorian netball’s ability to produce outstanding youth talent was further enforced when eight of the players from the wining team were named in the Australian 21-and-under squad. They are: Sarah Ashmore, Johannah Curran, Renae Hallinan, Melanie Kitchin, Sharni Layton, Kasey Stanaway and Thwaites.

They have Commonwealth Bank Trophy experience with Curran and Thwaites being outstanding performers for the Melbourne Phoenix and Kestrels respectively during season 2006.

Earlier in the day the ACT defeated South Australia 55-38 to claim fifth place and New South Wales defeated Queensland in a tight contest 49-43 to finish third.

Final Placings
1st Victoria
2nd Western Australia
3rd New South Wales
4th Queensland
5th ACT
6th South Australia
7th Tasmania
