Two NBL Refs selected for London 2012

National Basketball League referees Vaughan Mayberry and Michael Aylen have been awarded the ultimate honour, with both being selected to officiate at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Queenslander Mayberry and Aylen of Victoria are senior officials in the iiNet NBL Championship and their experience and expertise have been recognised by basketball’s international governing body FIBA by being nominated to officiate in London.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Larry Sengstock said the appointment of Aylen and Mayberry was a massive endorsement of the world class quality of Australian officials. Read more

Breakers, Blaze notch up Sunday wins

The New Zealand Breakers defeated the Perth Wildcats 101-99 in an overtime thriller at Challenge Stadium on Sunday between the NBL Championship’s top two teams.

Gary Wilkinson hit the go-ahead and ultimately game-winning basket with 27 seconds remaining in overtime off another sweet CJ Bruton (7 assists) feed.

Earlier, an amazing Mika Vukona tip-in with eight seconds left in regulation capped an 8-2 Breakers run to send the game into overtime. Read more

Blaze scorch Taipans, Sixers soar over Hawks

The Gold Coast Blaze blew the Cairns Taipans off their own court 94-77 with a deadly shooting display at the Cairns Convention Centre on Saturday night.

The Blaze shot 58 per cent from beyond the arc and barely missed when given an open look.

The result hands the Blaze the series win over Cairns, keeping the Taipans in a battle with Townsville for a spot in the top four. Read more
