Breakers well placed after Fury clean sweep

The NSW Breakers wrapped up their triple header against the Western Australia Fury with a third straight win after taking out this morning’s T20 match by eight wickets at Blacktown International Sportspark.

Batting first, Western Australia got off to a flying start with openers Charlotte Edwards and Chloe Piparo hitting 35 runs in the first five overs.

Off-spinner Erin Osborne (1-9) provided the first breakthrough by removing Edwards (17) with the first ball of the sixth over. Read more

Healy century steals show in Poulton’s 100th match

It may have been Leah Poulton’s 100th Women’s National Cricket League match, however all eyes were on Alyssa Healy as the NSW and Australian wicketkeeper scored her first century for the NSW Breakers in their 80 run bonus point win over Western Australia at Blacktown International Sportspark today.

NSW hit 4-299 from their 50 overs with Healy’s 146 runs from 137 balls the highlight. She struck 18 boundaries with her 50 coming off 59 balls, and her 100 in 113 deliveries.

Healy shared in a 99 run opening stand with Rachael Haynes (52) before combining with good mate Ellyse Perry for a 129 run fourth wicket partnership. Read more

Breakers complete perfect weekend against ACT

A Player of the Match performance by Ellyse Perry has taken the NSW Breakers to a 27 run win over the ACT Meteors in their second Women’s T20 match at Blacktown International Sportspark this morning.

The Breakers went into this match looking to complete a perfect start to the season after comfortably winning their opening T20 and 50 over matches on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Both of those games were played on the Blacktown International Sportspark No.1 Oval, however, today’s fixture was moved to the No.2 ground with the new pitch providing some extra assistance for the bowlers. Read more

Breakers begin quest for 10th straight WNCL crown

A massive summer for the NSW Breakers gets underway this weekend (October 10-12) against the ACT Meteors at Blacktown International Sportspark with the NSW side gunning for a 10th consecutive Women’s National Cricket League 50 over title, while also looking to reclaim the Women’s T20 crown they won in 2012/13.

NSW has been the dominant State since the inception of the WNCL since 1996/97. In that time they have won 16 out 18 WNCL titles, while in 2012/13 they became the first and only team so far to win both the WNCL and Women’s T20 in the same season.

Selectors have named a squad of 13 players for this weekend’s round against the ACT which includes six players with International experience, Alex Blackwell, Rachael Haynes, Leah Poulton, Ellyse Perry, Sarah Coyte and Erin Osborne, and two debutants in Lauren Smith and Emily Leys. Read more

Voges to steer Championship defence

Recently anointed Perth Scorchers captain Adam Voges believes his his group can claim back-to-back KFC Big Bash League championships – on one condition.

Voges, who takes the reins from the retired Simon Katich, has helped guide the Scorchers to the past two BIG Finals, including last campaign’s championship win, making Perth the most successful BBL club across the competition’s three seasons.

The 34-year-old was today announced at the WACA Season Launch as the club’s captain for the upcoming Champions League campaign and BBL|04 and said the new faces and returning ones provided Perth with a group capable of the same success, providing they brought the same work ethic. Read more

Canberra to host Big Bash League Final

The final of the 2014-15 KFC T20 Big Bash League will be played at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on Wednesday 28 January, Cricket Australia announced today.

Cricket Australia’s Executive General Manager of Operations Mike McKenna said: “We have looked at a number of options for hosting the final of the Big Bash League, given the unique summer of international cricket that lies ahead and the significant demands that will place on venues around the country.

“That consideration, combined with our efforts to further establish the BBL as a truly national competition was part of our decision making. Read more

Kallis’ Big Bash debut at Stadium Australia

All eyes will be on Stadium Australia on the evening of Sunday 21 December when superstar all-rounder Jacques Kallis will make his long-awaited debut for the Sydney Thunder against the Brisbane Heat.

One of the biggest signings of this season’s KFC T20 Big Bash League, Kallis will join skipper Mike Hussey to kick-start the Thunder’s campaign against the experienced Heat.

The first ‘derby’ match will occur in round two, when the Sixers visit Stadium Australia for Sydney Smash 06, with the men in green looking for their first victory over their cross-town rivals. Read more

Title defence opens at the Furnace

The Perth Scorchers will open their championship-defending campaign alongside the fans that helped propel them to the title, with two home games to start the fourth edition of the KFC T20 Big Bash League.

Perth will be hoping the fortunes that last season fell on #TheFurnace remain when it takes on Adelaide on 22 December in a match that has now-Strikers batsman and West Australian club-cricket revelation Craig Simmons return to his former home ground.

Fans will have to wait until the penultimate round to see a rematch between the two BIG Final contenders of BBL|03, with the Scorchers travelling to Hobart to take on the Hurricanes on Sunday 11 January. Read more

Sydney Showground to host Thunder Nation

The green of the Sydney Thunder will be seen at the Sydney Showground Stadium next season with the stadium to host two home matches during BBL|04.

Due to the Asian Cup football tournament being played during that period, the Thunder has had to seek an alternative venue to host two of their home matches and has come to an agreement with the Sydney Showground Stadium which is within the Olympic Park precinct and is currently home to the GWS Giants of the AFL.

The Showground will host two Thunder matches in January, while ANZ Stadium will host the other two Thunder home matches in December. Read more

Laughlin Adelaide-bound for BBL04

The Adelaide Strikers have bolstered their pace attack with one of Australia’s best ‘death’ bowlers, Ben Laughlin, joining the team for the next two seasons.

Laughlin was a power-house for the Hobart Hurricanes in BBL|03 as the second highest wicket taker for the competition with 18 wickets, at a strike rate of 12.8 and economy of 7.96.

The fast-medium’s second season as the Hurricanes leading wicket taker was key to the Hobart Hurricanes finals berth. His best game of the season came against the Sydney Sixers when he finished the match with 3/8 at a miserly economy of just 2.66. Read more
