Merrick steps down as Phoenix Head Coach

Ernie Merrick has stepped down from his position as Wellington Phoenix FC Head Coach.

The club would like to thank Ernie for his contribution to Wellington Phoenix and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Ernie has been a consummate professional since the day he arrived at Wellington Phoenix and was instrumental in overhauling the way the team performed on the field and how it conducted itself off the field. Read more

Phoenix are denied by late penalty decision

Roy Krishna scored his fifth goal of the season, but Wellington Phoenix were denied at least a point after a late penalty secured Melbourne City a 2-1 win at AAMI Park on Sunday night.

A deflected shot from Nick Fitzgerald spun beyond the reach of Glen Moss and gave City the lead on 44 minutes.

Phoenix reacted well after the break and duly equalised in the second half when Kosta Barbarouses was brought down in the box and Krishna scored from the penalty spot with a follow-up attempt. Read more

No Glory for Perth in Sydney

Perth Glory remains in fifth spot on the A-League ladder despite losing its Round Six encounter 4-1 against the undefeated Sky Blues, at Allianz Stadium this afternoon.

Glory carved open Sydney’s defence several times in the first 15 minutes, and almost netted a goal but the West Australians were unable to hit the target.

A defensive mistake in the 14th minute saw Sydney’s Milos Ninkovic open the scoring after Perth’s Dino Djulbic and ‘keeper Liam Reddy didn’t deal with a seemingly simple clearance. Read more

Santalab steals Glory with late equaliser

Perth Glory has been held to a 2-2 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers in a fiery encounter at nib Stadium today.

A season-high crowd of 13,290 witnessed the high tempo game, and was treated to two-goals in the opening five minutes.

The Wanderes got off to a blistering start, with marquee midfielder Nicolas Martinez scoring after just 32 seconds. Read more

Hat-trick Keogh steals the lime light

Irish international striker Andy Keogh has emerged as Perth Glory’s hero after scoring a perfect hat-trick in a fiery and spirited 3-2 win over glamour club Melbourne City, sending the Western Australians to the top of the A-League for at least the next 48-hours.

Keogh drew first blood in only the seventh minute of the match, after a well worked free-kick engineered by Nebo Marinkovic and Chris Harold who cut it back to Keogh to finish in front of goal.

On the stroke of half-time City equalised after being awarded a dubious penalty which saw last year’s golden boot winner Bruno Fornaroli score from the spot kick and send tempers flaring in both camps. Read more

Adelaide United clinch A-League Premiership

Adelaide United have been crowned A-League Premiers in the last round of the 2015/16 season.

Following Adelaide United’s 2-0 win over Melbourne City on Friday night, the Reds’ fate was left in the hands of Brisbane Roar, who lead the competition going into the final around of the campaign.

Brisbane’s failure to take all three points against Melbourne Victory on Saturday night ensured United would not be toppled from the league’s summit, clinching their first Premiership since the inaugural A-League season. Read more

Glory thrashes Roar in nine goal thriller

Perth Glory FC has extended its winning streak to five A-League matches with an emphatic 6-3 win over championship contenders Brisbane Roar.

In what was arguably the best 45 minutes of football in A-League history Glory grabbed the three points in front of a season high crowd of 12,156 at nib Stadium on Saturday.

Andy Keogh opened the scoring, giving the hosts the lead in just the fifth minute of play. An extended run of possession in the final third eventually led to a slip pass from Gyorgy Sandor for Josh Risdon. Read more

FFA and Phoenix agree to licence extension

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and Wellington Phoenix have agreed to a 10-year-deal for the extension of the club’s A-League licence.

Wellington Phoenix has an immediate four-year extension of its licence through to the end of the 2019/20 A-League with two further three-year extensions through to 2022/23 and then 2025/26, dependent on a number of factors, especially improved broadcast rights from New Zealand.

The immediate extension requires the authorisation of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the Asian Football Federation (AFC), Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) and New Zealand Football (NZF). Read more

FFA sanctions Melbourne Victory

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today fined Melbourne Victory $50,000 and imposed a suspended three (3) competition point deduction after finding the club guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

The finding relates to the misconduct of some Melbourne Victory supporters before, during and after last weekend’s Melbourne Derby at AAMI Park.

FFA has handed down the sanction after Melbourne Victory supporters were found to have taken part in a series of incidents, including the ignition of flares outside and inside AAMI Park, an alleged assault on TV news personnel outside the stadium, throwing missiles at a Melbourne City player and a Victoria Police officer, and altercations with police after the match. Perth soars to Glory in Sydney

Perth Glory FC sits just two points out of finals contention after a historic third consecutive win on the road.

The West Australians took all three A-League points today after defeating Sydney FC 2-1 at Allianz Stadium, extending its winning streak to four games.

Andy Keogh opened the scoring in the 23rd minute for the visitors. Gyorgy Sandor crossed the ball into the box which Sydney ‘keeper Vedran Janjetovic made a meal of and allowed Keogh to pounce and tap the ball into the back of the net. Read more
