Socceroos outplayed Chile but exit Russia

The Socceroos matched it with one of world football’s best nations on the world’s biggest stage, outplaying Chile but falling short of advancing to the semi finals of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup after a 1-1 draw at the Spartak Stadium in Moscow.

In Tim Cahill’s 100th match for Australia, the Socceroos played a high energy, fast-paced, attack-minded brand of football that combined Ange Postecoglou’s football vision with the long-time characteristics of Socceroo teams of yesteryear.

Socceroos face new frontiers

The Socceroos journey to the 2018 FIFA World Cup will take them to Jordan, Tajikstan, Kyrgyzstan and Bangladesh after they were drawn in Group B for the Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) second round of qualifying in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

Australia faces new footballing frontiers as it has never played Tajikstan, Kyrgyzstan or Bangladesh in a full international and only met Jordan twice, registering a win and loss in the two matches.

Socceroos head coach Ange Postecoglou attended the draw in Kuala Lumpur and has declared the players and staff will embrace the challenges in front of them. Read more

Vidmar praises Olyroos professionalism

Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar has praised the professionalism of his squad after the Olyroos cruised to three straight wins to progress to the AFC U-23 Championship, which is the final round of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The Olyroos defeated Myanmar 5-1 overnight following victories over Hong Kong (6-0) and Chinese Taipei (4-0) to progress as winners of Group F. They will now face the likes of Japan, Korea Republic, Iraq and UAE in the AFC U-23 Championships in Qatar in January 2016.

Vidmar was pleased by the results but more impressed with the way the players bought in to the National Team blueprint laid down by Socceroos Coach Ange Postecoglou, which runs down through all National Teams. Read more

Bresciano retires a Socceroo legend

Socceroo legend Mark Bresciano today announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on an international career that places him in the upper echelon of Australia’s greatest ever football players.

Bresciano made 84 appearances in A internationals for the Socceroos, scoring 13 goals and played in three World Cups (2006, 2010 and 2014), two Asian Cups (2007 and 2015) two FIFA Confederation Cups (2001 and 2005) and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

The 35-year-old made his debut for the Socceroos in the historic 1-0 victory over reigning World Cup Champions France at the 2001 Confederations Cup in Daegu and finished his career by playing a significant role in Australia’s glorious 2015 Asian Cup campaign. Read more

Socceroos to start World Cup journey in Perth

The Socceroos will start their journey to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Perth after Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the West Australian Government today announced the first home qualifier will be played at nib Stadium.

The match will be the first time the Socceroos have played an international in Perth since facing Indonesia in a friendly in 2005.

The Socceroos have now scheduled matches in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Newcastle in recent times, giving football fans from all over Australia an opportunity to watch the new-look Socceroos in action. Read more

Postecoglou ready for Asian Cup challenge

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou believes that should AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 hosts Australia progress from a group which contains former champions Korea Republic and Kuwait as well as Oman they will be “serious contenders” for a maiden continental title at the start of next year.

Australia will face 1980 champions Kuwait in the opening game of the tournament on January 9 at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, before taking on Oman and then two-time champions Korea following Wednesday’s group stage draw in Sydney.

And with 2007 quarter-finalists Australia looking to bounce back their heartbreaking 2011 final defeat by Japan, Postecoglou is looking forward to his side’s Group A challenge. Read more

South Africa for World Cup farwell match

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the NSW Government today announced that the Socceroos will meet South Africa’s National team, Bafana Bafana, in a World Cup farewell match in Sydney on Monday night May 26.

The NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell confirmed that the farewell match will be staged at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium and urged football fans everywhere to make the send-off for the Socceroos a memorable night.

“The Socceroos have done this nation and NSW proud by qualifying for their fourth World Cup last year in front of 82,000 ecstatic fans who filled ANZ Stadium in June,” Mr O’Farrell said. Read more

Postecoglou adds to Socceroo team staff

Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou has added a sports science cutting edge to his team staff ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup with Peter Cklamovski and Andrew Young joining Football Federation Australia (FFA).

Cklamovski (National Teams Football Analyst) and Young (Sports Scientist and Football Conditioning Coach) will bring Australia’s world renowned excellence in sports science and analysis to the Socceroos.

The pair will also undertake broader roles with Australia’s junior men’s National Teams as part of the FFA’s pledge to provide the resources to build a world-class support structure and systems around the Socceroos and national teams. Read more

Socceroos will call Vitoria home

The Socceroos will prepare for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Vitoria, Brazil after accepting an offer by the Governor of the State of Espirito Santo and the Espirito Santo State Football Federation to use the coastal city as its base camp.

The announcement was made today in Vitoria by the Governor of the State of Espírito Santo, Renato Casagrande, Football Federation Australia Chief Executive Officer David Gallop and the President of the Espirito Santo State Football Federation, Marcus Vicente.

As part of the base camp agreement, the State of Espírito Santo and the Espirito Santo State Football Federation will invest heavily in the Estádio Engenheiro Alencar de Araripe (Socceroos training base), which will then be left as a legacy to the people of Vitoria. Read more

Socceroos to take on the world’s best

Australia will take on some of the world’s best football nations after the Socceroos were drawn alongside Chile, Netherlands and Spain in Group B at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Draw in Costa do Sauipe, Brazil today.

Australia’s fourth appearance at the FIFA World Cup Finals begins against Chile on June 13 before they take on the Netherlands on 18 June and Spain on 23 June.

The group contains the defending World Cup Champions Spain (ranked No. 1), 2010 World Cup runners up the Netherlands (No. 9) and South American powerhouse Chile (No 15). It is a tough group but Socceroos Coach Ange Postecoglou spoke glowingly about the challenge ahead. Read more
