Holger Osieck’s contract terminated

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today announced that the contract of Holger Osieck as Head Coach of the Socceroos has been terminated.

The decision was taken after an internal review of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign and the international matches played since, including the 6-0 defeat to Brazil on 6 September and the 6-0 defeat to France earlier today.

The FFA Chairman Frank Lowy AC said the long-term interests of Australian football were paramount in making the change. Read more

Reds duo in Young Socceroos squad

Adelaide United young guns Jacob Melling and Awer Mabil have been named in the Young Socceroos squad for the upcoming COTIF U-19 International Football tournament to be held in L’Alcúdia, Spain from 12-21 August 2013.

Melling and Mabil are part a 20-player squad announced by Young Socceroos Coach Paul Okon for the tournament which is seen as the first steps in Australia’s qualification campaign for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

“This is the first stage of a new campaign with a new playing group,” Okon said. Read more

Seven secures Australian football marquee matches

Football Federation Australia (FFA) has today announced that the Seven Network has acquired the broadcast rights to the A-League All Stars vs Manchester United and Melbourne Victory vs Liverpool matches this July.

Both matches featuring the English Premier League clubs are sold out. The All Stars vs Manchester United will be played at ANZ Stadium on Saturday July 20 (7:30pm kick off) and the Melbourne Victory v Liverpool will be played at the MCG on Wednesday July 24 (8pm kick off).

FFA CEO David Gallop said the broadcast agreement with Seven was another sign of football’s move into the mainstream. Read more

Sainsbury and Duke receive Osieck call

Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck has selected talented Mariners youngsters Trent Sainsbury and Mitchell Duke for a National Team training camp to be held on the Central Coast next week.

The Australia boss has selected 11 A-League players as well as the uncontracted Lucas Neill for the camp as he continues to consider his options ahead of June’s vital 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Japan, Jordan and Iraq.

The training camp will be held in conjunction with a Young Socceroos training phase. Read more

Asian Cup 2015 venues and schedule unveiled

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015 Local Organising Committee (LOC) today unveiled the match schedule and host venues for the 2015 competition.

The competition will kick off in Melbourne on January 9, 2015 with an opening ceremony and Socceroos match at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium and will culminate in the Final at Sydney’s Stadium Australia on January 31, 2015.

The other three competition venues are Brisbane Stadium at Milton, Canberra Stadium in the ACT and Newcastle Stadium in NSW. Read more

Galekovic named in Socceroos squad

Adelaide United captain Eugene Galekovic’s stellar form between the posts has been rewarded with selection in the Socceroos squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Oman in Sydney on March 26.

The Reds’ inspirational shot stopper was one of three goalkeepers named in Socceroos Coach Holger Osieck’s 23-player squad for the match, Galekovic joined by veteran Mark Schwarzer and Central Coast Mariners custodian Mathew Ryan.

Despite not being a stranger to national team selection, which included being part of Australia’s 2010 World Cup squad in South Africa, Galekovic admits he was somewhat surprised to be given the call up to the squad for such a big game. Read more

Rogic, Ryan bound for Hong Kong

Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck today confirmed Central Coast Mariners young guns Mathew Ryan and Tomas Rogic have made his final squad of 20 players for the East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) East Asian Cup qualifying tournament.

Ryan and Rogic will depart for Hong Kong on Friday, with the Socceroos playing their first match of the tournament against the hosts at the Mong Kok Stadium on Monday December 3 (kick-off 8:50pm AEDT).

Following their game against Hong Kong, the Socceroos will play matches against DPR Korea on Wednesday December 5 (kick-off 11:30pm AEDT), Guam on Friday December 7 (kick-off 8:50pm AEDT), and Chinese Taipei on Sunday December 9 (kick-off 8:00pm AEDT). Read more

Brisbane trio called into Socceroos camp

Three Brisbane Roar players have been called into Holger Osiek’s extended 25-man provisional squad for next month’s East Asian Football Federation (EAFF) East Asian Cup 2013 qualifying tournament which will be held in Hong Kong.

Club captain Matt Smith, right-back Ivan Franjic and speedy youngster Ben Halloran have all been called into the squad which will gather in camp in Sydney.

The players will join the rest of the squad on Monday under the watchful eye of the Socceroos head coach, who will run the rule over the assembled players before trimming the squad to 20 for the Hong Kong tournament which runs from December 1-9. Read more

Young Socceroos qualify for 2013 World Cup

A hat-trick from Corey Gameiro has helped the Young Socceroos to a 3-0 victory over Jordan in the quarter-finals of the AFC U-19 Championship and in the process qualify for next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.

The Young Socceroos got off to the perfect start with a goal in the 10th minute after Adam Taggart was fouled in the box by Monther Raja. Corey Gameiro stepped up to take the resulting penalty and placed his shot low and hard into the bottom right corner of the goal, past the Jordanian goal keeper Noureddin Bani Ateyah who had guessed the right way.

Midway through the first half Jordan had a great chance to equalise when Belal Qwaider found space inside the box, but Young Socceroos goal keeper Paul Izzo closed him down well and blocked the shot with his legs. Read more

Young Socceroos defeat Vietnam

The Young Socceroos have defeated Vietnam 4-0 in their second match of the AFF U19 Tournament at Thong Nhat Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Young Socceroos Head Coach Paul Okon made 9 changes to the starting line-up from the previous match due to the fact that his team was to play four matches in eight days.

The first 30 minutes was a very even contest and Vietnam forced a couple of great saves out of the Young Socceroos goalkeeper Paul Izzo. From then on the Young Socceroos took control the game. Read more
