Mathew Ryan selected for Socceroos

Central Coast Mariners custodian Mathew Ryan has today received his first full call up to the Socceroos.

The outstanding young goalkeeper was picked by German mentor Holger Osieck for the teams’ FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier against Saudi Arabia at AAMI Park on Wednesday February 29.

Currently in the United Arab Emirates in camp with the Australian U23s, Ryan will link with the Socceroos following the Mariners clash with Melbourne Heart in Melbourne on Sunday. Read more

Australian U23s defeated in Tashkent

The Australian U23s hopes of the qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games hang in the balance after losing 0-2 to Uzbekistan in their AFC Asian Qualifier for the 2012 London Games match played at the JAR Stadium in Tashkent yesterday.

Due to extreme temperatures the kick-off time for the match was moved from 8pm to 3pm yesterday, but with the mercury around -12 C it was of little comfort to the players.

The Australian U23s started strong with Mate Dugandzic and captain Oliver Bozanic each having shots on target in the opening ten minutes. Read more

Brisbane three in Olympic squad

Brisbane Roar will supply its full quota of three Olyroos representatives following the squad selection announced by head coach Aurelio Vidmar today.

Midfielders Mitch Nichols and Rocky Visconte will be joined by defender Matt Jurman as part of the 20-man squad to face Uzbeckistan in Tashkent and the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi in the third round of Olympic qualifiers.

Football Federation Australia recently implemented a three player per club ruling on Olyroos selection to alleviate the strain on club’s heading into the business end of the A-League season. Read more

Socceroos to play Denmark in friendly

The Socceroos will play an international friendly match against Denmark in Copenhagen on June 2, 2012.

Football Federation Australia (FFA) today confirmed the fixture would be the final warm up match before the fourth round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck said he was delighted to be able to play against such quality opposition as Denmark prior to the final phase of the qualification campaign. Read more

Australian Under 23s held to scoreless draw

The Australian Under 23s were held to a 0-0 draw by Iraq in their AFC Asian Qualifier for the 2012 London Games match played in Doha, Qatar last night.

In a match that was unusually played in very difficult, windy conditions in the Qatari capital, the Australian U23s dominated the majority of play and possession in the first half.

Australian U23s Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar handed qualifying campaign debuts to goalkeeper Mat Ryan and attacking midfielder Dimitrios Petratos. Read more

Socceroos to play at AAMI Park for the first time

The Socceroos will play at AAMI Park in Melbourne for the first time ever when they host Saudi Arabia in their final 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier Third Round match on Wednesday 29th February 2012 (Kick-off 7:30pm).

Football Federation Australia (FFA) and the Victorian Government made the historic announcement today at AAMI Park with Socceroos Head Coach Holger Osieck and star Melbourne-based Socceroos Harry Kewell and Archie Thompson.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley said the Socceroos first appearance at AAMI Park would be a celebration for all members of the football family from the grassroots to the Hyundai A-League. Read more

Nichols named in Socceroos Squad

Brisbane Roar midfielder Mitch Nichols has been rewarded for his impressive club performances by being named in Socceroos Head Coach Holger Oseick’s 23-player squad for the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Oman and Thailand.

Nichols’ form has been outstanding in Brisbane’s opening four fixtures, including the lone goal in his side’s 1-0 win over Central Coast Mariners and three assists in the Roar’s 7-1 demolition of Adelaide United last time out.

The first to admit he didn’t make the most of his chance with the Australian national team when making his debut as a 19-year-old in an AFC Asian Cup qualifying game against Kuwait in 2009, Nichols plans to grab this opportunity with both hands. Read more

Emerton returns to Socceroos squad

Sydney FC star Brett Emerton has been recalled to the Socceroo squad for the two crucial 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers against Oman and Thailand on November 11 and 15.

Emerton was this morning named in Holger Osieck’s 23-man squad for the two matches after missing the recent 3-0 victory over Oman when he made his Sydney FC debut.

The 32-year-old will be hoping to add to his tally of 89 A Internationals for Australia as he looks to reach a century of appearances in the green and gold. Read more

United trio selected for Young Socceroos

Three Gold Coast United players have been selected in Jan Versleijen’s 18-man Young Socceroos squad for the SBS Cup which will be played in Shizuoka, Japan later this week (August 18-21).

Midfielder Jake Barker-Daish, utility Josh Brillante and promising forward Elliott Ronto all departed for Japan last night to take part in the tournament. Mitch Cooper and Bobby Russell were also in line for selection, but minor injuries prevented them from travelling with the squad.

Barker-Daish was a member of the recent Young Socceroos squad that competed at the FIFA U-20 World Cup earlier this month and will again push his international claims. Read more

Socceroos defeat Wales

The Socceroos have tuned up for the FIFA 2014 World Cup Asian qualifiers with a slick 2-1 victory over Wales in Cardiff.

Tim Cahill’s crisp volley in the 44th minute and a neat Robbie Kruse finish in the 60th minute were fair rewards for some beautiful passing and clever build-up by the Socceroos.

Darcy Blake reduced the arrears for Wales with a header in the 82nd minute, setting up a tense finish, but the Welsh rarely bothered the Australian defence. Read more
