Hockeyroos opening day Oceania defeat

Wednesday October 30, 2013 by

The Hockeyroos narrowly lost their opening Oceania Cup encounter to the tournament hosts New Zealand on Wednesday afternoon, going down 3-2 in a match that could ultimately have gone either way.

First half goals from Kellie White (NSW) and Brooke Peris (NT) overturned an early deficit but Petrea Webster’s equaliser for New Zealand just before half time left the game delicately poised going into the second period.

Both sides created opportunities from penalty corner set pieces but the match was decided with just ten minutes remaining when Sophie Cocks scrambled home from close range after a turnover inside the Australian circle. Read more

Hockeyroos topple Argentina

Sunday October 20, 2013 by

The Hockeyroos swarmed all over Argentina with a committed effort at both ends to claim the gold at the International Super Series. The 3-0 victory came about from an early Australian blitzkrieg before goalkeeper Rachel Lynch would deny Las Leonas time and again, particularly in the second half.

The Hockeyroos claimed their third successive gold at the Hockey 9s event and coach Adam Commens noted the tremendous victory against the quality of the current World Champion Argentines.

“We can see from this performance today that we can match it with Argentina. They’re a really attacking side and very athletic and the bigger ground suits them. Read more

Hockeyroos reach Super 9s Final

Friday October 18, 2013 by

It was Jade Close’s 26th birthday but it was skipper Madonna Blyth who had most to celebrate after grabbing a spectacular hat-trick as the Hockeyroos crushed Canada in the International Super Series Hockey 9s on Friday night.

The Canadians will be potential opponents in the game’s traditional format at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year but they were dispatched without mercy as the Australians made the most of the extra-wide goals.

The result means Australia and Argentina will go head to head in Sunday’s final – though they will meet first in the last round-robin match on Saturday – suggesting that the weekend’s action could be a humdinger. Read more

The game marked the Hockey 9s comeback for Kobie McGurk following her second knee reconstruction as she joined a Hockeyroos side which featured a mix of youth and experience. Read more

Albertarrio double leads Las Leonas to win

Tuesday October 15, 2013 by

Despite an Ashleigh Nelson goal that threatened a second half comeback, Australia’s Hockeyroos went down 3-1 to Argentina in the third and final Test in Perth on Tuesday evening.

In a match that celebrated the 350th international appearance of seven times World Player of the Year Luciana Aymar, it was her young teammate 20 year old Agustina Albertarrio whose two goals proved critical to securing the series win.

Albertarrio’s first, in the 27th minute, was a stunning strike that gave Rachael Lynch in the Australian goal little chance. And a scrambled goal 22 seconds before half time from Ana Rodriguez put the Hockeyroos on the back foot going into the break 2-0 down. Read more
