Six teams remain undefeated after 99 tries were scored on the first day of the NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park.
The Sharks and Titans opened the Nines with Kane Elgey scoring the first try of the tournament and recording a successful return to rugby league after a lengthy injury stint.
The Panthers, Sea Eagles and Eels secured two wins from two outings, while all three Queensland teams (Broncos, Cowboys and Titans) head into day two in good shape. Read more

NorthQueensland Cowboys head coach Paul Green’s 2017 NRL Auckland Nines squad is a blend of youth and experience with the 18-strong playing group heading across the ditch tomorrow.
Led by perennial Nines skipper Gavin Cooper and regular season co-captain Johnathan Thurston, the Cowboys’ Nines unit heads into their fourth campaign having never failed to qualify for the knockout rounds.
“The squad’s a good mix of the lesser experienced players with the guys who have played a bit more footy, and who do well in this format,” Green said. Read more

Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles will field eight of their new players at the NRL Auckland Nines tournament at Eden Park on the weekend of February 4-5.
Sea Eagles Coach Trent Barrett has today released his 18-man squad for the annual tournament which sees Manly taking on St George-Illawarra Dragons, Parramatta Eels, and the NZ Warriors, in the Piha Pool.
The Sea Eagles are the first NRL club to name their squad for the 2017 tournament that carries NZ $2.6 million dollars plus in prize-money. Matches are played over two nine-minute halves with nine players per team on the field. Read more

Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles Head Coach Trent Barrett today officially named premiership, Origin and International halfback Daly Cherry-Evans as Jamie Lyon’s successor as the club’s new captain.

And the club’s newest international Jake Trbojevic has been named as vice-captain.
Barrett hailed the naming of the two as having key roles as part of a brand new era for Manly.
“Daly has been a standout during our pre-season. He is a natural leader and was an obvious choice for us as our next captain,’’ Barrett said.
“Jake is our vice-captain and being only 22-years-old, the experience he will gain in this role alongside Daly gives us a long two long term leaders who can take this club to where it needs to be.” Read more
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will take their round three NRL Premiership clash with the New Zealand Warriors to Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin on Friday March 17 (8pm kick off NZST).
Following visits to Hamilton (2014), and Wellington (2016); the Bulldogs have gained a strong support base in New Zealand, partly due to the history of Kiwi greats, both past and present, including Jarrod McCracken, Darryl Halligan, Sam Perret, Sam Kasiano,and Greg Eastwood.

The reigning Premiers, the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks will open the 2017 National Rugby League Premiership in a blockbuster match against the Brisbane Broncos.
NRL CEO Todd Greenberg today launched the 2017 schedule which includes a reduction in five day turnarounds, the introduction of a 6pm Friday game and matches in every mainland State of Australia.
The season will kick off with the Downer NRL Auckland Nines (February 4 and 5) and the popular Harvey Norman Rugby League All Stars game which will be held at Newcastle for the first time on February 10. Read more

Some of the greatest players ever to represent Australia will be honoured during the final Country-City match next year.
Country Rugby League (CRL) and NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) today announced that Mudgee will host the match on Sunday 7 May at the Glen Willow Regional Sports Stadium.
CRL CEO Terry Quinn said he was determined that the historic match, which has been staged on and off since 1911, would go out on a high. Read more

The Sydney Roosters have today announced that the Club will host a ‘home’ game in Adelaide in 2017.
The match will be played at one of the country’s most iconic grounds – Adelaide Oval – and will be the first time that the Sydney Roosters have played in South Australia.
South Australian Tourism and Sport Minister Leon Bignell today joined Roosters CEO John Lee, Head Coach Trent Robinson and senior player Mitchell Aubusson, as well as NRL Head of Football Brian Canavan, to make the announcement at Adelaide Oval. Read more
Two new State based competitions will be run in NSW and Queensland from 2018 as part of a new pathway program for elite NRL players.
Under the new structure, approved by the Australian Rugby League Commission, each competition will be expanded and decentralised to comprise up to 16 second tier clubs.
NRL Head of Football, Brian Canavan said all NRL clubs will be encouraged to form partnerships with two of these teams from which they will draw talent for the NRL Premiership. Read more
Decorated National Rugby League prop and North Queensland Cowboys premiership winner Ben Hannant has called time on a storied career, announcing his retirement from the game, effective immediately.
The 31-year-old forward – who has played 52 games for the Cowboys over the past two seasons – said injuries and medical advice prompted him to call time of his playing days, a decision he didn’t make lightly.
The veteran prop said it became evident after recent knee surgery that the best decision for his family and his body was to retire. Read more
