Diamonds clean sweep Malawi series

Saturday October 19, 2013 by

A dominant second half set up from the Australian Diamonds clean sweep of series against Malawi Queens 64-37 at Gold Coast Convention and Entertainment Centre tonight.

In a carbon copy of Wednesday night’s first Test, Malawi started strongly and created a two goal lead early but this was quickly erased. Led by captain Laura Geitz (GK), Australia’s defensive end was superb as they restricted opportunities for Malawi shooter Mwai Kumwenda (GS).

Malawi’s ball movement was slow yet proved to be effective at different stages and while Australia couldn’t contain it, they led 13-12. Read more

Diamonds claim series

Monday October 7, 2013 by

Australia’s Netball Diamonds have reclaimed the Constellation Cup with an impressive 52-47 win over New Zealand’s Silver Ferns at a packed Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne tonight.

Both sides settled into the game quickly, but it was the Silver Ferns who claimed first blood when Cathrine Latu (GS) opened her team’s account. The match ebbed and flowed on court, but very little separated either team on the scoreboard with no more than two goals separating them for much of the quarter. Australia led 12-10 at quarter time.

Australia performed strongly during the second quarter, especially in defence as Latu struggled to receive the ball cleanly. It was captain Laura Geitz (GK) and her defensive partner Bianca Chatfield (GD) that guided Australia to a 26-21 half-time lead. Read more

McMahon calls time

Wednesday July 24, 2013 by

Sharelle McMahon has called time on her illustrious career, deciding that today was the right time for her to step away from netball.

When the Melbourne Vixens bowed out in straight sets with a preliminary loss to Queensland Firebirds, McMahon was visibly emotional as she held son Xavier and waved to the crowd.

Many in the crowd believed that it was a signal that she had played her final game but gave little away when later asked about her future. Read more

Firebirds down Vixens to reach Grand Final

Monday July 8, 2013 by

Queensland Firebirds run to premiership glory continued with a thrilling 50-46 preliminary final win over the Melbourne Vixens at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Sunday.

The Vixens played consistent netball for three quarters against Adelaide Thunderbirds in their major semi final before going down by 10 goals and were looking to rebound against a Queensland Firebirds team that ended New Zealand’s ANZ Championship hopes with a three goal defeat of last year’s premiers Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic.

Vixens opened their account courtesy of GS Karyn Howarth before Firebirds levelled things up at one goal each. Strong ball movement in attack and tight defence helped Vixens snatch back momentum after the visitors held sway for much of the opening quarter, before trailing 13-10 at quarter time. Read more

Vixens into finals with dominant performance

Sunday June 23, 2013 by

2013 ANZ Championship

Melbourne Vixens warmed up for the final series with a 69-39 obliteration of West Coast Fever at Hisense Arena this afternoon.

Vixens needed to win their final home and away match after two disappointing losses to the NSW Swifts and defending premiers Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, while Fever once again struggled against another Australian team despite making significant inroads under former Australian coach Norma Plummer this season.

The home side started strongly courtesy of GA Tegan Caldwell as she helped her team set the tone for what was to be a dominant opening quarter. Vixens controlled play with slick and fast pace ball movement in attack, something that Fever couldn’t contain as they trailed by seven 17-10 at quarter time. Read more

Vixens rebound with win over Steel

Monday May 27, 2013 by

2013 ANZ Championship

Melbourne Vixens moved back into the top two with a 58-52 defeat of the Southern Steel at Hisense Arena tonight.

Vixens were stinging after last week’s loss to Queensland Firebirds, which coach Simone McKinnis labelled as “flat” and weren’t underestimating a Steel team that were on a run of five consecutive wins.

It was a shoot out during the opening minutes as both teams were ferocious all over the court, as Vixens looked to start strongly and push ahead. Three consecutive Tegan Caldwell (GA) goals handed Vixens a handy three goal buffer before the Steel clawed their way back with scores tied up 15 goals each at quarter time. Read more

Swifts return to form

2013 ANZ Championship

NSW Swifts ended a disappointing run of seven consecutive losses with a 63-44 win over the Northern Mystics in Sydney this afternoon.

First halves have been a strong point in a season where Swifts have struggled with consistency across a full match. While the Mystics opened scoring courtesy of GS Cathrine Latu, it was Swifts that settled into the contest first with strong defensive pressure everywhere.

A handy five goal butter midway through the quarter opened up the game and while Mystics tried to match their opponents, they trailed 15-10 at quarter time. Read more

Firebirds win in true test of character

Sunday May 19, 2013 by

2013 ANZ Championship

The Queensland Firebirds showed strong character with a determined 57-46 win over Melbourne Vixens at Hisense Arena this afternoon.

Tragedy struck the Firebirds camp last week when captain and defender Laura Geitz’s father passed away in a farming accident on the family form. With Geitz being given time off, Natalie Medhurst stood in as captain and handled the role brilliantly.

In a frenetic opening quarter, it was a see sawing first few minutes as both teams matched each other with scoreboard and defensive pressure. The Firebirds shooters Medhurst (GA) and Romelda Aiken GS fought through a tight defensive grip that the home team had applied to help their team to a 13-10 quarter time lead. Read more

Vixens earn hard fought win over Swifts

Sunday May 12, 2013 by

2013 ANZ Championship

The Melbourne Vixens continued their winning ways with a hard fought 50-42 win over an inconsistent NSW Swifts in Sydney today.

Vixens were brilliant in their ability to restrict the Central Pulse to just 30 goals last week and were confident to again perform solidly, while Swifts just wanted to finally get another win in a season where they have lacked consistency.

In a seesawing first quarter, both teams matched each other early with sharp skills and scoreboard pressure. The Vixens created a handy four goal lead midway through the quarter and while the Swifts were behind, their intensity didn’t drop as GA Carla Dziwoki levelled it all up. A Susan Pratley goal on the quarter time whistle saw Swifts lead 14-13. Read more

McMahon turns back the clock

Sunday May 5, 2013 by

2013 ANZ Championship

When a player returns to netball after a long layoff, it usually takes time for them to find their rhythm again.

Melbourne Vixens star shooter Sharelle McMahon played the first game of this season against Northern Mystics, before missing three games due to problems with her other Achilles.

Her performance against the Central Pulse in Melbourne today featured the vintage physicality and smooth shooting that the 35 year-old is renowned for. Read more
