NSW Rugby announces record participation figures

NSW Rugby Union are pleased to announce record increases of junior, senior and regional participation levels across the state for 2016.

The Australian Sports Commission data released today shows rugby is now one of the most popular sports in the country, with 50,000 students reached through the Australian Rugby Union’s “Game On” program.

Of those numbers, close to 50 per cent were run and managed by NSW Rugby Union Development Officers, with more than 21,000 students reached and more than 2,700 programs delivered. Read more

Hooper wins 2016 John Eales Medal

Wallabies vice-captain and flanker Michael Hooper has claimed the 2016 John Eales Medal, winning the award for a second time. Hooper’s standout season saw the 24-year-old score four tries for the Wallabies in 2016 to be named Australia’s Man of the Match in three out of the six domestic Tests.

Hooper was the clear leader of the ‘player’s player’ 3-2-1 votes tally, amassing 296 points during the designated period from the pre-World Cup USA Test on 5 September 2015 to the final Bledisloe Cup Test against New Zealand on 22 October 2016.

Despite injuries this year, David Pocock’s incredible World Cup campaign elevated him to second position with 189 votes, finishing ahead of Bernard Foley, Will Genia and Israel Folau who rounded out the top five. Read more

Spirit win NRC Grand Final cliffhanger

The Buildcorp National Rugby Championship has crowned a new champion as Perth Spirit ran out 20-16 winners over NSW Country Eagles in an enthralling contest at a chilly Scully Park in Tamworth on Saturday night.

Fuelled by a stirring defensive effort, the West Australians secured their first title in front of an enthusiastic country crowd which was hoping to see the minor premiers come away with the spoils.

Both sides got away to a strong start but it was Perth Spirit, playing in their second NRC Grand Final in three years, who looked set to claim first points when Richard Hardwick barged over in the 13th minute, only to be denied in a desperate tackle by Eagles winger Reece Robinson to prevent the backrower from grounding the ball. Spirit secure Grand Final berth

The Perth Spirit have booked their place in the 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship Grand Final with a 42-24 win over the Sydney Rays at Pittwater Park in Sydney this afternoon.

The Rays started strongly shooting out to a 16-0 lead within the first 10-minutes but from there it was all the Spirit as the men in black and gold scored 20 unanswered points to lead by four at the break.

Three second half tries wrapped up the result for the Spirit and secured a date with the NSW Country Eagles in Tamworth for next weekend’s decider. Read more

Rising go down to Eagles in semi-final

The Melbourne Rising’s 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship campaign has come to an end after going down to the NSW Country Eagles 50-24 in the semi-final in Newcastle on Saturday.

Doubles from Samuel Figg, Reece Robinson and Jake Gordon helped the Eagles to a seven-try-to-three victory in warm conditions to secure a home grand final in Tamworth next weekend.

Earlier, there was no sign of the slow start that plagued the Rising when the two sides last met in the third round, when freshly capped Wallaby Sefa Naivalu got the visitors off to a flyer in the first minute. Read more

Fiji to enter NRC in 2017

The Australian Rugby Union, Fiji Rugby Union and World Rugby have today announced that a Fiji-based team will enter Australia’s Buildcorp National Rugby Championship competition in 2017.

Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama joined ARU CEO Bill Pulver at ARU headquarters in Sydney today to deliver the historic news.

The Fiji team will comprise locally-based players from Fiji’s national second XV, ‘Fiji Warriors’ and will play all of its home matches in Fiji. Read more

Rising book semi-finals with bonus point

The Melbourne Rising have secured their spot in the 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship semi-finals despite going down to the Sydney Rays 38-32 at Frankston Oval on Sunday.

The Rising will contest finals for the third consecutive year when they take on minor premiers NSW Country Eagles in the semi-final after they secured a bonus point to finish outright fourth.

The Rays, who secured a home semi-final with their second place finish, were held scoreless in the second half but successfully fended off a gallant comeback from the Rising to claim a five-try to four victory. Read more

Spirit secure Finals berth in Canberra

The Perth Spirit have secured a place in the 2016 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship finals series with a 42-36 win over the Vikings in Canberra this afternoon.

The Perth side started on the defensive absorbing pressure in the early stages before fighting back to head into the half time break down 22-16.

The second half was a different story with the Spirit’s forward pack dominating the Vikings all over the park and putting on a clinic at scrum time to help the visitors come from behind for the win. Read more

Australian Rugby announces new media rights arrangements

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) has announced new and significantly improved media rights arrangements for 2016-2020 which will enable the code to re-energise the game at grassroots level and invest in key strategic areas to ensure its future health and prosperity.

The ARU will receive a total of AUD $285m in media rights revenue from the total package of SANZAAR agreements – a 148% increase on revenue achieved from the previous media rights arrangements (2011-15).

Fox Sports will continue its proud partnership with Rugby after retaining the Australian rights for Test matches played in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as the expanded 18-team Asteron Life Super Rugby competition which will for the first time feature teams from Argentina and Japan in 2016. Brisbane City topple Vikings, retain Championship

Brisbane City have gone to back-to-back in the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) after defeating the Canberra Vikings 21-10 in the Grand Final at Ballymore on Saturday afternoon.

Played in front of 4,327 passionate supporters, Brisbane City posted three-tries to Canberra’s two to claim the first undefeated season in NRC history.

Man-of-the-match Nick Frisby and lock Cadeyrn Neville scored a try each in the first-half to give Brisbane City a 13-10 halftime lead, but it was a staunch second-half defensive display that secured the home-side the championship for a second-consecutive year. Read more
