Spirit falls short against Rams in Adelaide

The Perth Spirit has lost to the Greater Sydney Rams, 44-34 in a high-scoring match in Round Three of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) in Adelaide.

The Rams led 10-0 at the 20 minute mark before three consecutive tries to the Spirit’s Alec Hepburn, Zack Holmes and Dillyn Leyds saw them take a 21-10 lead into the half-time break.

The teams traded tries at the opening of the second half before Greater Western Sydney overtook and extended their lead to 44-26 with four successive tries. Va’a Mailei’s final try of the match got the Spirit back within 10 points before time got away from the Perth side. Read more

Queensland Country suffer narrow loss

Queensland Country have gone down narrowly in their first away game of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship to the Canberra Vikings, 26-21, at Viking Park in Canberra.

The match was a tight contest which saw the score locked at 13-all at halftime. The Vikings scored two tries to Country’s one in the second half to claim the win.

Head Coach Steve Meehan said that beside the result, he was happy with the effort and application of the Queensland Country side. Read more

Melbourne Rising click at Ballymore

The Melbourne Rising made it three from three at Ballymore on Saturday afternoon, defeating Brisbane City 79-18 in Round Three of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC).

Both sides entered the match with unbeaten records, with the Melbourne Rising having racked up 100 points en route to two bonus point victories against the North Harbour Rays and Sydney Stars.

And the free-flowing Rugby that had been evident in the opening two fixtures was again on show, with the Melbourne Rising in for two tries before ten minutes were even on the clock. Read more

Spirit beaten by new comeback Kings

Perth Spirit’s hopes of going two from two in the National Rugby Championship today has been dashed by a courageous Brisbane City team that has recorded another comeback win.

Down and out in their first round match against the Sydney Stars, Brisbane has again rallied after half time to defeat their more fancied opponents Perth 26-21 at McGillivray Oval.

A decent turnout at UWA Sportspark on an afternoon resembling spring conditions saw both teams laden with international and Super Rugby household names. Read more

Rising continue perfect start in Sydney

The Melbourne Rising have made it two from two, defeating the Sydney Stars at Leichhardt Oval in Round Two of the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC).

With the exception of a five minute lapse midway through the first half, when they conceded two tries, the visitors always looked in control and secured a second consecutive bonus point victory, and maintained their perfect start to the new competition.

Flyhalf Jack Debreczeni ran the show as chief playmaker, taking advantage of a wonderful platform laid by the dominant Melbourne Rising scrum to unleash the side’s outside backs throughout the contest. Read more

Qld Country fall short of NSW Country

Queensland Country has gone down to the Charles Sturt University NSW Country Eagles, 37-13, in their Buildcorp National Rugby Championship opener at Bond University on the Gold Coast.

NSW Country scored five tries to Queensland Country’s two to claim the win, despite a spirited second half performance from the Queensland side in front of near 2000 fans at Bond University Rugby Club.

Queensland Country head coach Steve Meehan was optimistic about his team’s performance despite the result. Read more

Vikings record first win over Rams

Season 2014 has received a kick start for the Canberra Vikings as they took down the Greater Sydney Rams in Parramatta 37-18 on Thursday.

Another slow start threatened to derail the Vikings, but a dominant second half cemented the Canberra based side in the driver’s seat as they made the most of their opportunities to dominate the contest.

Vikings skipper Fotu Auelua said the players had regrouped well after a tough start to the match. Read more

Tries rain as Melbourne Rising win first up

The Melbourne Rising have made an impressive debut in the Buildcorp National Rugby Championship (NRC) with an entertaining 55-34 win over the North Harbour Rays at AAMI Park

After a tight opening hour, the Rising ran rampant in the final 20 minutes to record eight tries in total; including doubles to Jack Debreczeni, Sefanaia Naivalu and Telusa Veainu.

With both teams making their debut appearance in Australian Rugby’s new third-tier competition, they each contested with an attacking mindset to produce a fast-paced match with plenty of scoring opportunities. While the Rays utilised their strong forward pack to setup the majority of their scores, the Rising proved to have too many offensive weapons to run out comprehensive winners. Read more

Perth opens NRC campaign with Spirited victory

The Perth Spirit has started their 2014 Buildcorp National Rugby Championship campaign with a thrilling 28-23 victory over the Canberra Vikings at Canberra’s Viking Park today.

The Spirit started strongly and played with continuous pressure and an air-tight defence to lead the home side 13-0 at the half-time break.

The Vikings took control in the second term with two early tries and then jumped ahead when they capitalised on when the Spirit was reduced to 13 men after two yellow cards. Read more

Brisbane City record opening-night win

Brisbane City have recorded an entertaining 45-20 win over the Sydney Stars in front of approximately 3,400 fans in the opening match of the 2014 Buildcorp NRC.

Despite many of the Brisbane players having played just four days ago in the Queensland Premier Rugby Grand Final, the home side stormed away with a 29-0 second half performance.

Brisbane City head coach Nick Stiles was thrilled with the second-half turnaround by his team, under trying conditions. Read more
