Aussie Men’s Sevens through to Sydney Quarter Finals

The Australian Men’s Sevens team has qualified for the Sydney 7s Quarter Finals against Wales after finishing second in Pool C with victories over Scotland and Papua New Guinea.

Australia will play Wales at 1.04pm AEDT tomorrow as the side continues their campaign to win their home tournament.

Aussie Women finish fourth at Sydney 7s

The Australian Women’s Sevens team has finished in fourth at the Sydney 7s after falling in the Semi Finals to arch rivals Canada and New Zealand in the Third Placed Playoff.

Australia started the day on a winning note, defeating a strong Fiji side in the Quarter Finals but some handling errors and missed opportunities cost the home side in front of a capacity Allianz Stadium crowd.

Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach,Tim Walsh lamented his team’s missed opportunity after the semi-final loss to Canada: “It was a devastating way to finish. It was a fantastic atmosphere to perform today. We gave it everything but it wasn’t good enough. We made some crucial errors and got punished for it. Read more

Aussie 7s Women soar through to Quarter Finals

The Australian Women’s Sevens team have qualified for the Quarter Finals with three wins from three at the Sydney 7s on Friday. The tournament is the first-time Australia’s Golden Girls have played at a World Rugby Series event on home soil.

Australia overcame Brazil, Ireland and Fiji to book a place in the Quarter Final against Fiji in a rematch of their thrilling final Pool B match on day one. The rematch between the two sides will kick off on Kippax Field at 10.44am AEDT.

Australia started the day slowly but built into impressive form for the home fans with Emilee Cherry and Ellia Green scoring three tries a piece. Read more

Injury hit Aussie Sevens finish Wellington in 10th

The Australian Men’s Sevens team has finished the Wellington Sevens in 10th position with two wins out of a possible three on day two of competition.

Australia started day two with a tight 17-14 win over Samoa, before accounting for Wales 24-10 to make the Challenge Trophy Final. An injury hit Australia fell at the final hurdle going down to Kenya 17-19 to finish Wellington in 10th position.

Australia outclassed by experience

The young Australian Men’s Sevens team have fallen to Sevens powerhouses Fiji and South Africa on Day One of the Wellington Sevens but finished the day on a winning note with victory over Japan.

An injury to Boyd Killingworth added to the Aussie7s injury woes with Club Captain Lewis Holland, Ed Jenkins and Jesse Parahi all unavailable for selection due to injury.

Australia will play in the Challenge Cup Quarter Finals against the fourth placed finishers in Pool C on Sunday.

Australia stumble on day two of Cape Town 7s

The Australian Men’s Sevens team have had a disappointing day at the Cape Town Sevens, losing to Argentina in the Challenge Trophy Semi Final on day two.

Australia started the day with a strong victory of Rugby minnow, Uganda (42-12) but the injury affected Australian side didn’t apply critical pressure on Argentina when they had the advantage, which allowed the South Americans to come back in the match.

Australian Men’s Sevens team finish Dubai in fifth

The Australian Men’s Sevens team has finished the Dubai Sevens tournament in fifth position with victories over New Zealand and Scotland rounding out a solid day for Andy Friend’s young squad.

Australia fell in their Cup Quarter Final against Wales but made amends for that loss with a 20-12 victory over the All Blacks Sevens side and the in-form Scotland 19-12.

The Aussie 7s Men’s squad will now head to Cape Town for the second leg of the Sevens World Series.

Young Aussie Sevens side take third in Vancouver

A largely inexperienced Australian Men’s Sevens squad has finished the inaugural HSBC Canada Sevens in a highly creditable third place.

Coming into the tournament with seven players in its squad with five World Series caps or less, Australia defeated Scotland (24-17) in the Cup Quarter-Finals before losing to New Zealand in the Semis (28-19). However, Australia roused themselves to stun current world champions Fiji in the 3rd Place Play Off (19-12).

Aussies qualify for Vancouver Cup Quarter Finals

The Australian Men’s Sevens team has safely qualified for the last eight at the inaugural HSBC Canada Sevens after topping Pool B in Vancouver.

Andy Friend’s side clinically disposed of Russia (43-5) first up but fell at the death to tournament hosts Canada (14-12). Needing to win by a 12-point margin or more, Australia were in scintillating form to destroy the previously unbeaten Wales (49-14).

By qualifying as top seeds, the Aussies booked a Cup Quarter-Final date with Scotland at the sold out BC Stadium tomorrow morning (AEDT). Read more

Aussie Sevens fall at final hurdle to Fiji

The Australian Men’s Sevens team has fallen agonisingly short of winning the Las Vegas Sevens after losing to world series leaders Fiji.

Australia saw off South Africa (14-12) in a bruising Cup Semi-Final before Fiji staged a second-half fightback to take all 22 Sevens World Series points on offer (21-15) in another memorable Final.

After finishing runners-up in Sydney last month, Australia’s Cup Final appearance in the USA was the first back-to-back tournament deciders it has reached since May 2010. Read more
