Dragons to play in World Club Series

The St George Illawarra Dragons have accepted their invitation to participate in next year’s World Club Series.

The European Super League have confirmed that the Dragons will join the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Brisbane Broncos in the series which will be played in the United Kingdom over three days from February 20-22 next year.

The tournament will culminate with the World Club Challenge to determine the best Rugby League team in the world. Read more

Cowboys lock in Broncos, Titans trials

Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston is set to return to one of his old hometowns when North Queensland plays its final 2014 pre-season trial match against the Gold Coast Titans in Toowoomba in February.

The Queensland and Australian Kangaroos superstar was a secondary school student at St Mary’s College in Toowoomba and played football for the All Whites club, now known as Brothers.

The Cowboys squad for the Saturday, February 22 fixture will not be selected until closer to gameday but it is likely Thurston will be included in what will be the team’s last hitout under new head coach Paul Green before the opening round of the 2014 NRL season. Read more

Broncos announce Dunedin trial match

The Brisbane Broncos will play on New Zealand’s South Island for the first time when they do battle in an historic trial in Dunedin in February next year.

The Broncos have done a deal with NRL counterparts the New Zealand Warriors to face off in a full-scale warm-up game in New Zealand’s newest, largest and most versatile indoor arena, Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Construction of Forsyth Barr Stadium was completed in August 2011, in time for last year’s Rugby World Cup and with its unique, transparent roof this match will mark the first time the Broncos have played under a roof since the 2009 preliminary final in Melbourne. Read more

Storm edge Broncos in controversial thriller

The Brisbane Broncos have succumbed to Melbourne Storm 19-18 in a tense affair in front of 41,467 fans at Suncorp Stadium.

The result marked Brisbane’s fifth defeat in a row, but the home team can take plenty of positives from the result which was only decided by a Cooper Cronk field-goal in the dying minutes.

The Broncos managed to start off the game in quick fashion, similar to last week’s game against the Bulldogs. Read more

Eels stun Broncos at Suncorp

The Parramatta Eels have stunned the Brisbane Broncos 42-22 in their Round 21 clash at Suncorp Stadium on Monday night.

After a grinding start, four tries in 11 minutes just before half time opened up a 30-6 lead at the break, with Parramatta holding off a Broncos second half surge to claim a very good win.

The Broncos started very well, creating pressure on the Eels line in the opening five minutes. They got three consecutive sets in attack, but good defence from Parramatta kept them at bay and eventually forced an error. Read more

Griffin’s coaching contract extended

Anthony Griffin has been awarded for the stellar start to his NRL coaching career with a contract extension from the Brisbane Broncos.

The Broncos today announced that Griffin’s tenure had been extended for another two years to include the 2014 and 2015 seasons.

He had already been contracted until the end of next year. Read more

Pink Broncos power past Bunnies

The Brisbane Broncos have given club stalwart Petero Civoniceva the perfect gift in his 300th first grade appearance, with a 26-12 win over Souths at Suncorp Stadium tonight.

Sporting pink jerseys in support of ‘Women in League’ round, the Broncos’ performance reflected the spirit in which ‘Bulla’ plays the game – tough, uncompromising and gutsy.

Though the Broncos lacked polish in attack, coach Anthony Griffin would be pleased his side escaped with the two premiership points to skip clear into outright second spot on the NRL ladder. Read more

Petero begins awesome farewell ride

Petero Civoniceva has invited fans to join him on a whirlwind ‘Farewell Tour’ that begins with his 300th NRL appearance at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Civoniceva will hit the triple-century mark when he runs out against the Rabbitohs, further entrenching his place in rugby league history.

He has also been honoured by the Broncos with a separate membership category announced today – the Farewell Petero Awesome Foursome – launched to allow supporters to jump on for the ride. Read more

Baby Broncos win big

The Brisbane Broncos have scored an impressive 40-22 win over the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Despite the slippery surface, the young Broncos side posted seven tries, all without the help of their State of Origin stars.

The opening exchanges of the match were a real arm wrestle, as both sides adjusted to the conditions. It became clear that whoever controlled possession would go a long way to winning this match, with the wet weather making handling difficult. Read more

Brisbane add to Newcastle’s misery

The Brisbane Broncos have continued Newcastle’s misery with an at-times tense 50-24 victory at Suncorp Stadium.

Playing their first Sunday game of the year, Broncos big guns Justin Hodges, Peter Wallace and Sam Thaiday revelled in the daylight to make amends for last week’s dark performance against the Storm.

Brisbane broke away to an early 24-0 lead before Newcastle injected fear into the Broncos camp with three unanswered tries before halftime and the first after the interval to get within two points with 20 minutes to go. Read more
